Isn't there some issue with these cars that the cooling system basically has an expiration date on it? I seem to recall others that had to replace basically everything, radiator, WP, thermostat, all the belts and hoses to get it to work again. Is that on a different Bimmer or is this the beast?

Shame it started out as an auto....otherwise it'd have a healthy margin for profit after fixing.

If it HAS overheated, it definitely needs work.

In reply to TiggerWelder:

Yep, that's the e46 you're thinking of. You get about 100k out of the cooling system, much less if you use budget aftermarket components. These all have the alloy block, too, so when they overheat they often need a fresh long-block.

I'm a pretty adventurous guy, but an automatic, AWD e46 that's been overheating seems like a bad bet, even at $1850.

I'm not sure if the AWD models suffer the same issue, but all the RWD cars equipped with ZF transmissions grenade the reverse drum. BTDT, once was enough.
