To be honest, I had forgotten these existed. A supercharged, manual trans XR7 Cougar---- needs a engine rebuild, but looks nice:

My friend Chris had this exact same car many years ago. It was one of many Cougars he had(couple of 88 Bostonian edition models too), and he swears this was the best one evah!! Of course he had to do head gaskets every 6 months or so, and munched the transmission with his ham-fistedness(is that a word?). I believe the transmission was a Mazda sourced box, and he paid handsomly to get it rebuilt once or twice, claiming the first time the shop messed up the rebuild. I think (know) he just didn't know how to drive. Still cool cars even though the engines are notorious for head gasket problems it seems.

Possibly, but I remember my friend saying that the shop said it was a Mazda trans, and therefore was harder to get parts for, hence more expensive. Could be he was just a sucker. Probably.
KyAllroad said:Shouldn't it just be the same T5 trans that the 1988 T-birds had?
No. It uses a M5R2 Mazda 5 speed that is similar to what was used in the trucks. Very bullet proof, but also not a particularly fun transmission to shift.
Edit to add: The truck transmissions are common as dirt. The SC and Cougar have a different shifter location and arangement that makes them pretty rare. Shifter parts are non existant last I looked, other than a short throw shifter that makes the transmission shift even more clunky.
