At some point I want to trade out my spoiler for a wing. I'll likely go with one of the 9Lives big wangs.
How are these mounted? I know there is such a thing as chassis mount wing but these seem to just be bolted to the trunk lid? Is that ok?
It seems like it should be tied into the frame or bumper support somehow to keep from ripping off my fiberglass trunk (2002 Mustang).
A good wing makes more downforce than drag. At 100 mph you may be producing 300+ pounds of downforce. If your fiberglass trunk can handle that ... OK
OBTW, bad mounts can mess up the aero under the wing, making it less effective.
Miata people use the edge of the trunk opening - there's a strong vertical lip in there. I don't know enough of the Mustang's structure to offer specific suggestions, but the bumper substructure is probably a good bet.
I sometimes laugh at the thought process of many throwing a wing on a car. Is it for looks, or performance?
If it's for performance it is a lot of work to figure out just where it needs to be mounted in relation to the rest of the car. A half inch can make a huge difference. We would go to the wind tunnel with up to 8 mounts ready to try.
Some mounting positions produce more drag than downforce. But, they look cool.
For us shadetree guys, sometimes taping on yarn, or spreading oil on the bottom surface and just driving on the interstate is our only method of evaluation...

The goal is performance. It will be used for Time Trials.
I forget, what ruleset/subset are building against?
CAM, plus one of the SCCA TimeTrial rules?
In reply to sleepyhead the buffalo :
Midiv Time Trials rules, Production D. It's just simple classing based on power/weight with modifiers for tire size, treadwear, etc. I'm not worried about CAM. I'm trying to transition more to track stuff.
My OCD and the title of this thread made me come in here and do this:
MR DUKS
MR NOT
OSMR
CM WANGS
LIB, MR DUKS

I don't know what any of that means.
So when I mounted my wing the first time I welded steel angle to this great German steel. After the second or third endurance race the pressure was tearing through my welds. I decided to mount it to the frame and have not had any issues since.
See pictures below.
wow, those rules are... impressively open? Am I reading correctly that there's no limit on how far out a splitter and or wing can hang from the body?
most other time trial rules I've looked at have one. Usually between 5 and 6inches back from the rear bumper; and then either 5" wider than the body, or no wider than the sideview mirrors.

It's an incredibly dumb redneck joke. I laughed.

I mounted my Wang to the trunk, but did some extensive bracing underneath first. I also wanted to gut the unnecessary structure to offset the weight.
From the top side everything looks normal apart from the upright brackets.

We have great success mounting it to the trunk of the S197 and S550 trunks. I'm not super versed with mustangs, is the SN95 trunk weaker than the newer ones at all? The rear stakes on the S197 really makes it stable for a trunk-mount. We use that same design on a few others, NC, E36, FRSBRZ, just to name a few. The FR500S mustang used that same concept as well.
IIRC, we had one guy buy the 1776 universal mounts, builder's wáng at whatever width he decided, and put them on his SN95. I haven't heard anything else about it, so I figure it worked

I'm checking with the guys on if we have a scan of an SN95 to maybe do a kit as well. Fingers crossed, but don't hold your breath.

Thanks for the info. I'm capable of fabbing whatever I need to make it work, I just wasn't sure how other people were doing it. The main issue I see with the SN95 is the trunk lid is fiberglass. Both the S197 and S550 has metal trunk lids. I'd welcome anymore info you have on putting one on a SN95. I can take measurements if needed.
I was looking into doing something like this rather than mount to the trunk unless the trunk is indeed strong enough.
you could always pull a Catesby Jones / GoTurnStop setup:
edit:
I forget if this is called a "reverse swan neck" or "the dead goose"
AJ Hartman has a lot of aero development on his SN95 Mustang, and a ton of great information on his youtube channel. I'm not sure if he has any bits about mounting wings to that specific chassis, but I wouldn't be surprised to find something useful there.
Another issue is how far apart the post are going to be for it. I wouldn't mount anything serious to the trunklid, unless braced like that bmw.
I know the Charger Daytona actually has bracing in the trunk that bolts to the floor. I was pondering an idea about using longer wing post like that GTR, but mounted to the trunk floor, with slots cut in the trunk, so it can open.
