Pretty sure they are wheels and not hubcaps. Lincolns used them, too.

Ahh, thanks for that, might be why I'm not finding them :)

Found a winner for the lace treatment if I can find it in large quantities. Wife likes all things beach. Ok, maybe not this exact one, but something like it. Maybe without the fish.

well, yes, but its lace ;)

I've come up with the final design I think. There will be a lace design similar to that for the tailgate but the sides are getting something else ;) I gotta break out the pencils and see if I remember how to draw.

Well this is what I've come up with. Wife hates the car already so going with her least favorite style on the car wasn't a far stretch. Ignore my weak artistic skills and donk like tires. All the work on the sides will be done in wood tones so it will kind of resemble an inlay but I won't be getting carried away with any faux graining or anything.

What if you did the wood tone sides to look like a giant match stick that was lit?

I think I'm already stretching the limits of my artistic ability on this one, not sure it would turn out looking anything like a matchstick.

So if you're going the vinyl route, maybe as another design, make the "wood" a glowing ember at the front of the car, go from ember to burnt, then burnt to unburnt. I think that would look pretty damn cool.

something i always wanted to do was use real wood veneer. i would say you have around 60sqft per side you can get Teak for around $2.60 a sqft. just something to think of

Not going with vinyl, this will either be painted or veneer at this point

I've been mulling over a veneer more and more. Been investigating it a bit. They sell PSA backed veneers which might be good for the job I'm just not sure how well the adhesive will hold up over time and how to keep the veneer from getting destroyed over time, obviously it will need to be sealed and coated to protect it, just not sure what will be the best products for the application.

I saw a Pinto that looked like the panels had been veneered. Then they framed it with real wood like a psuedo woody. A real head scratcher for sure, but looked well done.

It's hard to say how well veneer would hold up to the temperature changes in the northeast combined with being glued to a metal substrate.

yeah, that's my concern, all the data I can get from the suppliers is that it is prone to expansion and contraction and this wont be a garage queen so I have my doubts on how it will hold up. Especially since it would be multi part to give the inlay look so if it contracts and leaves gaps it won't look very good.

i think it would work, the metal substrate does not expand as much as a wood substrate would. you would have to coat it with a good marine poly. i just had my boat done and they used a veneer that was about 1/32 thick

No worries on the threadjack, its a beautiful boat and very useful information. If I could get the veneer to look half that good on the side of the wagon I'd be a very happy camper.

Ford used vinyl contact paper for the wood. Couldn't you do the same thing? Different types of wood (as above) white pinstriping and then clear the whole thing?

It would brin a new definition to Land Yacht.

a) the wood vinyl is actually pretty expensive, $600 - $1000 for the materials (yes you can get cheaper stuff but it wont last and wont lay out well)

b) I'm just trying to go with something a bit different :)

What about some of the sweet 3m vinyls that have been discussed in another thread this week. Most are pretty new looking but they are inexpensive and easy to use.

The 3M vinyls are the ones Im discussing, in the woodgrain they are not cheap. I thought vinyl would be my cheapest option but it turns out its the most expensive option and I much prefer the more custom look of either painting it or using wood veneer.

Got it. I didn't realize that the wood versions were so expensive. I think I can do my entire starlet for like 400 in one of the solid colors or carbon fiber

Best quote I got locally was $600 and that was just for a single color wood not the multiple different ones I need to pull off the design. And it would be much harder to make the design look right with the vinyl. Im leaning toward the veneer right now, wont be cheap but it would be a great look.

I do like the Salt Flat wheels on a Wagon. Just enough, and not too much.

Actually the old school lowrider guys ran Supremes and Cragars, not Torq Thrusts. If you want that look, run a set of Supremes!
