On top of that they were excellent to deal with, extremely prompt, communication was awesome and the driver was a great guy to chat with.
Kudos to Fountain City Towing, Tennessee

In reply to edwardh80: It was the oil line from the turbo so it was under pressure, we tried to get off the road quick enough but simply ran it too long and hurt the bottom end.
We were on US75 and it was dark, parking this rig on the side of the highway was far from safe, we threw in a gallon of oil and got to the next exit. Then we rigged our line repair, which was done with the help of a local guy who happened to stop by and went to get us some 1/2 hose, then we filled it with oil and started it but we knew it was toast, there was a bottom end knock.
We decided to push our luck to see if it would make it home, at that point the engine was coming out anyway. It didn't go far and boom, shrapnel actually struck the floor after bouncing off the road.
:P
i figure some gigantic motor needs to go in there... something you have to cut a "vent hole" in the hood for...
TunaDad's hauler is powered by Cat, although I don't know which one. He has pretty good luck, and gets way better fuel economy than you quoted towing a two-car enclosed loaded trailer.
In reply to edizzle89: Towing the rig was going to happen anyway, unless we tried, unfortunately it failed quickly thereafter.
That said plans are afoot, it could be very soon that we will be doing a swap, 12 Valve ISB Cummins is the plan. Maybe a few tweaks along the way to make the towing less demanding.

Detroit 12V71?
Which ISB?
The last Cummins I designed in was a QSX. I think Ignorant, er, Caffeine somethin or other now used to work at Cummins and can provide insight.
Mine was a QSX15, probably too big for your application. Here's one on ebay though.

We used it to start a small gas turbine.

He has that in mongo, and wants to swap it out. They aren't great engines. ISB/ISM will be the right size.
Haven't kept up on the thread, ouch this sucks. As I watch, hopefully I'll learn a thing or 2 about these diesels
In reply to chandlerGTi:
Detroits are great as long as you like automated rust proofing and working on nasty oily vehicles. You almost can't kill the things.
This is the proper way to feed a Detroit.
I don't care what happens, but now I want to see one of those ridiculous 23 speed Eaton's in it too because of that one thread.

Yes they do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vaeoOEsHPY
Probably one of the best sounding engines in my book. Certainly the best of the diesels.
