grandson just bought it. looks great, supposed new clutch pulls off fine but when the R's get up it's like it Disengages I think it's a 1.8L 5 speed so what are the basics to make it handle/stop, I won't do an engine change for 25 hp so tell me what to do for 150 hp engine simple stuff and not a v6, kinda iffy about the twincam (don't have one eather) because of computer stuff unless that can be Simple too.
A decent cam is your best bet for a 1.8 SOHC. A 2.0 ABA block with stock head is awesome, but I'm sure a lot more than what you want to do.
Bilsteins and H&R springs will be a large improvement on handling. Big rear sway bars do wonders if you really want it to handle.
thanks I'll read up on the 2.0aba, Being it's Not My Car,and I have several Projects, trying to keep it simple for now.
In reply to GTXVette:
Lots of options for a VW. Cam, headers & exhaust will wake it up. ITBs will make it sound even better. For suspension, there are two distinct camps - add a big rear swaybar, or add a big front swaybar. Or you can do both.
Of course springs and/or coilovers are a good idea.

Europe didn't get the ABA, but the US didn't get the wagon, so we're even.
Vr6 is a drop-in swap, as is the 16v. So are the TDIs. 1.8t 20v from the mk4 is also nearly a drop-in swap, but more computer nonsense is necessary.
Lots and lots and lots of info on these cars over on the vwvortex, so do some reading up there for the basics.
All manner of engine swaps have been done with these, so your best bet will be to start with your budget and with your experiences and determine what you want to do from there.
thanks simon, well If the Wagon wasn't made for the american market I guess we should look up some History. I am a Go Big or Go home guy, so I will check out the V-6 got to be some in the P a P yard. Pete I will check it out and see what's been done so far, heck there has been plenty of time for mods,1993 !

I've never even seen a Mk III wagon, so I'd like to see some pics of it.
My dream for such a beast would be a 1.8T + MegaSquirt, but that's just me. Or an ALH TDI (but you will have to do some ECU work). Kinda depends on the goals for the car.
Just drove to cartersville to look at the car,45 mi. round trip,to I guess, prove to myself The grandson is a dumb ass, I Guess because of the Shape of the Golf, he thought it was a wagon, but it's a 4 door, the upside is a 2.0 and it is a 5 speed.
It is in really good condition body wise and inside is clean and neat appearing.

Well then, its a 4 door 2.0 golf.
That's an ABA if it's in the states. That motor will take boost pretty easily. 250hp with just a chipped ECU and basic turbo setup is not unattainable. Since it is a pre-95 (obd-1) car, it has piston oil squirters and can take a decent beating.
For the vr6 swap youll need a whole donor car. Find a wrecked vr6 jetta or golf of the same bodystyle and just swap everything over. Engine, trans, front subframes, suspension, ECU, engine harness, etc. There are multiple in-depth howto threads on the various other VW forums about the specifics of this. The vr6 with a turbo can make anything from 300-600hp on a mostly stock motor, depending on how far you want to push it. Just make sure you replace the timing chains and chain guides first, as they are a 60k mile wear item and will grenade the motor if forgotten.
