I drove it to work yesterday and a few miles from home the temp gauge started rising. I made it home and popped to hood to find I let the steam out of the engine. One of the small coolant hoses split and sprayed coolant everywhere.
I made the mistake of buying a previously riced Civic. What a nightmare...
Yours is looking pretty good!
The question was asked earlier about my plan for this car. I dont have any grand plans for it right now. After a string of projects that required time and resources I didnt have and ended in frustration, I decided to keep it simple.
It should also be noted that my wife has instituted a "Honda Only" rule. My Jeep is grandfathered in but she told me I am only allowed to play with Hondas for awhile. No European cars allowed. She said she doesn't like the grumpyness that comes when I work on other stuff. I spent my 20s as a Honda tech and supplemented our income fixing and flipping Accords and Civic when we lived in Columbus Ohio. I will admit its nice messing with something I know well enough to pay my mortgage while fixing them on flat rate.
So my plan is to just enjoy the car. Hit some autoX and rallyX. Drive it to work and annoy a coworker who thinks anything Japanese is ricer.
However the 70hp isnt going to work for me forever. So I bought this other Civic real cheap. My wife calls it Barney.
It came with a B18B1 in it
I know that is a boring engine swap and not really GRM material, but its easy and pretty much doubles the power. i hope to get it in the Hooptie in the next month or so. I am also building some horse fencing so I just have to work it in.
Since Barney is an EX I am able to steal some other stuff off it. I pulled the cluster and did the ol' swap-a-roo of the speedometers to keep mileage matching (plus barney has well over 300k, hooptie 160ish)
And because I crack myself up, I did this
Took a look at the coolant situation today. From the spray Inwas seeing the other day from the bypass hose I figured it split from age. However the cut matches perfect to this bracket it is rubbing on. I will pick up a hose and make sure the "cut to fit" hose is appropriately cut.
That car will be a hoot with a B18B in there. I'm assuming you'll swap over the EX brakes as well.
It'll still get decent fuel mileage with that motor, too.

Yep. Gonna bring the EX brakes over. I really classed it up and added the clock as well. Now I will be able to tell at a glance if its Hammer Time or Time to Get Ill.
Yes. I know the dash needs cleaned

LOL
I think it might be more "Hit Me baby One More Time"
Why not just run with Barney? Besides the hood, it looks pretty good.
And I'm partial to an EG Coupe.

Rust. The rear wheelwheels are gone. The whole thing is pretty beat. That pic doesnt do it justice.
Even in sticksville where I live the only Hondas like this I see are riced so again nice to see you rescue it.
I didnt do anything to the car tonight other than buy the bypass hose I need. Instead I apent some time trying to sort out the unneeded wiring on my Jeep. While I was in the shop I snapped some pics of Barney's rust. Thought you Florida/Georgia folks might like to see what an average Michigan Civic looks like.
wbjones wrote: that should buff out
Buffing out is the last step. First you have to take some window screen and crumple it up. You jam it up in the fender and let it act as the backing to make a new panel out of Bondo. You can use Newspaper if you are on a budget. Personally I like the "Great Stuff insulation/cut to shape/skim coat of Bondo" method. Then you spray it with some 99 cent walmart paint. THEN you buff!
Was Barney for sale on Xceedspeed? That car looks pretty familiar. Hope you got a good deal on it!
If I were to go down the Civic path again(DONOTWANT), I'd probably go with an EJ1 with a P8R headed, cammed LS or B20 and a GSR trans. I'd much rather have an Integra, though.

Yep. Came from Xceed. He was willing to negotiate and I was happy with the price.
Oh wow, Thank you for enlightening us Atlanta people on what rust does to early 90's Civics. I had heard but never laid my eyes on something THAT bad, THAT new.
Good luck with the hatch.

I've had some pretty good deals come out of that site, people start with reasonable pricing then get beat up by low ballers to where the low ball offers eventually get offered. Nice buy.
Today I replaced the split hose, slit the tip of my left middle finger open cutting the hose to the proper length and gave the hood off of Barney to Dr Boost so he could practice making bird houses out of Honda hoods or something. Just so y'all dont feel shorted of images, here is a pic of the coolant being bled. I didnt take a pic of my finger being bled
You'll need to log in to post.
