Did your seat buckle not have an electrical connection?

Nice truck. Gf has an 03 zq8 ext cab flareside that we love. Planning to l31 swap that one. Nothing fancy but they are fun trucks and if you don't like 4th gen Fbodies (had one, didn't like it) they're the closest thing to a rwd sports car Chevy made back then besides the Corvette.

And carpet is out.  Fairly clean.

And I'm guessing this is a baby roach?  Most I've found are dead but a few are alive.

Little rust on the pass side floor.  Por15 for this?  Where's the cheapest place to buy a bunch of it?  I have lots of rusty cars...

Bingo!  Thanks for that, I couldn't figure out why they'd need an airbag sensor on the driver's seat.

It's a fun little truck, rear end is a little light and it could really use a posi though.

I thought Posi was part of the ZQ8 package?

From what I've read it was still an option.  I haven't really beat on it too hard yet but it only seems to spin one.  It'll also chirp the tires thru third gear.  Need to check the rpo codes.

Nice truck, overall looks pretty clean.  As mentioned earlier, bug bomb, to get rid of them, while the interior is out.  Those scooters like to travel and propagate, and can survive nuclear attack.  Sand, wire wheel etc. the rust and Por 15.

If you want a good limited slip, get a used Zexel torsen from a 98+ F-body.  We got one used on eBay for about $120 for our S10.

I would think RPO G80 is a posi, like it is in the big trucks.

Yeah I would nuke it with a bug bomb while the seats and carpet are out. That will make it easy to clean up. They carry the egg sacs around with them so if you've only found a few dead ones, and a few live I would hazard to guess you're ok. I just hate the damn things. My family has a ~60 acre tree farm that I used to live on with my wife. Those little bastards were everywhere.

Yes, it should be, though it looks like the s10s got the gov-bomb just like the big trucks - not really the posi I'm looking for.  As sonic said it looks like a zexel torsen from an F body is the hot ticket to swap in.

I keep telling myself to not dump a bunch of money into a $2k truck with 210k miles... but then I come back here and you guys are bad influences wink.  I really hate open diffs but the posi will have to wait until I get this thing sorted.

Yea, they're up here but they're not everywhere like in the south.  I've stayed in some pretty crappy apartments and I've never even seen one up here.

Picked up a roach bomb on lunch.  Actually, picked up 4 as noone seems to sell singles.  I have the seats and carpet in the back of the truck, should I set them back in the cab during the bug bomb so they're treated too?  I haven't seen any signs of roaches on the seat bottoms or on the underside of the carpet, I pulled back the insulation everywhere it was loose and everything looked clean under there.

And welcome to the next episode of dead_sled learns there are BUGS, BUGS, AND MORE BUGS IN FLORIDA.

I finished vacuuming the interior.  I only found evidence of roaches under the carpet on the driver's side.  They were around one of the floor drains.  There we only two live baby roaches so I killed those and vacuumed them and all the dead ones up wednesday.  I was concerned I didn't find the live adult that was chilling on my lap the other morning but I need to move forward.

SWMBO convinced me to wait to bug bomb the truck.  She's had some health issues in the past few years and I'd rather not expose her to something that can kill a roach.  Plan is to leave the carpet out for a while and see if anything else pops up.  I honestly don't think I had a full on infestation.  I have a few bottle traps baited with cat food so I should know if there are any sticking around. I wanted to fog to treat the dash and vents but I haven't seen any evidence they're in there.

I drove the hearse to work Thursday and while I can hustle the that thing around the corners, the weight is really evident after driving the s10.

Drove the hearse to the Slayer concert last night and got lots of "that's how you show up to a Slayer concert!"comments.  Show was great, Lamb of God was amazing as always.  Dude in suit moshing the berk out was the highlight of the night.  SWMBO wanted a pic with him but he was busy with the single girls.  Seriously.

So I must not have hit post for my last update.  I stayed away from GRM all weekend to try to up my productivity, it's too easy to start reading a build thread and lose an hour of time.  Meanwhile it killed my productivity yesterday as I tried to catch up on everything I missed.

Friday night I was working to get the truck drivable so I could take it to super summit at Norwalk on Saturday morning.  I got the interior all wiped down and the drivers seat installed with no carpet.  As I was pulling the carpet and passenger seat out of the back of the truck I noticed a fire ant running across the tailgate.  Hmmm, I should probably address that.

I pulled back the sides of the bedliner to find two piles of what I assume was mulch on either side of the bed.  As I didn't need fire ants in my driveway, I drove to a little turn around down the road and pulled the liner out.  I then drove around trying to blow the mulch out of the bed, which didn't work.

I got out at a stop sign and used my gloved hand to sweep the rest of the mulch out.  That's when I found the massive nest of fire ants in the drivers side pile.

I swept out as many fire ants as I could, then smashed the rest.  I swept the mulch out of the pass side only to discover atleast 3 cockroaches were living in there.  They got swept out and stomped.  One of the fire ants managed to get in my glove and start biting me, but it could have been worse.  I drove home and sprayed the bed down and washed it out with some dish soap.

When I pulled the liner I found a mint container on the one side.  Hmmm, that's weird.  I thought there might be drugs in it as I've found some other questionable substances in the center console and under the carpet.  Turns out it's something even better than drugs, a key fob!  Score!  Now I just have to fix the power locks.

So I didn't go to Norwalk Saturday as it was raining in the morning.  I did some things around the house and then got to work on the truck.  I re-washed the bed as I did a really bad job at midnight the night before.  I then washed down the console and all the interior trim pieces I had pulled from the truck.  I don't think the rubber liners are supposed to come out of the cup holders but brown kept leaking out from under them so I yanked them out.  I'm guessing this is a glue they use to secure them?  I've soaked/washed them out atleast 10 times and they're still leaking brown.

I dropped the spare to check the tire.  I've never seen an under-bed spare actually drop down without cutting  the cable...

The arm rest lid on the center console was pretty "soft" in the middle.  I pulled it apart to find this mess.  Not sure if I'm going to try to fix and reinforce this one or try to find a good used one.

I headed in to clean up and eat dinner.  SWMBO made lasagna, my favorite.  Then I sat down on the couch "for a minute".  Next thing I know SWMBO is trying to wake me as it's now pouring out and I didn't clean anything up yet.  She tried to move the passenger seat into the garage but it was too heavy for her.  So my tools, shop vac, passenger seat, carpet, AND ALL THE PAPERWORK FOR THE TRUCK was soaked.  I set all the stuff out in the garage to dry and went to bed.

Since the passenger seat was already soaked, I took the time Sunday to run about 15 gallons of water through the seat.  The soap/water didn't look that bad coming out of the seat, but this was the last 5 gallons I sucked out of it.  I had to cut my losses and move on.

Spent my lunch hour yesterday waiting 1.5 hours at the DMV so they could do a 30 second VIN check on the truck.  My phone died 20 minutes in.  I'm surprised I'm still alive.

Did an oil change after work since I think it was due.  Plug was a little hairy but not too bad.

About halfway home from Florida we got stuck in bumper to bumper traffic and the trans started sounding pretty noisy.  20 miles later and it seemed to quiet down and sounded fine for the days I drove it last week.  After I pulled the carpet out it started sounding pretty loud again.  I was hoping this was just because the insulation was gone.  After the oil change I wanted to check the trans fluid level.  While snooping around I found one of the bellhousing bolts had a whole 2 threads holding it in.

Looking around some more I'm pretty sure this trans has been out of the truck before, brackets and lines were not mounted correctly.  I really shouldn't be surprised given the mileage.

Just before dinner I got the fill plug out of the trans and stuck my finger in there.  Dry.  I got my pinky in there and reached down as far as I could - still dry frown.  Berk!  Dinner time.

I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep without knowing if the trans was empty.  Got the truck back up in the air after dinner and pulled the drain plug.  OIL, Wooo!  But how much oil?  Looks to be about a quart.  Capacity is a little over 2 quarts.  And I probably should have taken it around the block to warm it up before draining.  Plug didn't look great.

Fluid was dark.  I plan to strain it this evening to see how much crap is in it.

Seems this trans fluid is $15-20/quart.  Some guys run 5w30 instead.  I'm thinking about running some 5w30 for a couple days to flush it out since I didn't warm it up first.  Need to call the dealer to get a price from them, summit has it for ~50 shipped for 3 quarts.  I thought dex6 was pricey when it was $6+ per quart, though I did need 13 quarts per car so that hurt a little more.

Final update gets us to real time.  Drove the hearse today as there's no fluid in the S10 trans.  Ran downtown on lunch to swap over the title.  Fun times parallel parking a hearse while everyone watches cool.  It's exactly the same length as a parking spot.  Metal bumpers FTW!

Title swap went surprisingly smooth.  The truck is now officially mine, for better or worse.

Not sure if I'll get anything done on the truck tonight, the sewer line to the septic tank is draining slow (again) so I'll be-a snaking when I get home, we'll see if I have motivation to deal with any other crap after that.

In reply to Patrick :

It's actually around 8 if you look hard enough.  But it seems there's two synchromeshes, one with friction modifier and one without.  The nv3500 is fine with the one without fm but the nv1500 is the only trans that gm specifies the fm one for.   At least that's what I've read.  All of the non Delco fluids are non fm.

The Pennzoil synchromesh specifically states it's compatible with the fm fluid part number but only for topping off.

So I'm an idiot.  I thought all s10s had the nv1500.  I really need to order a set of factory service manuals, I hate trying to find info from online forums (except grm, I trust most of you to only give advice on things you know).  For some reason the FSMs for these are 400-500, not sure why, I guess more people work on their own s10 compared to the caddies I'm used to where FSMs run sub 100.

So it looks like I have an nv3500 so I can run the Pennzoil synchromesh.  My plan is to run 5w30 tomorrow so I can get the echeck done and hopefully get my plates.  I'll pick up some synchromesh tomorrow and swap it out either tomorrow or Friday.

Should I not run 5w30 for a day or two?  Some guys on the forums claim they've run it for years with no issues but now I'm back to trusting the same guys who confused me before.

I ran Mobil 1 5w-30 in a GM fwd transmission for a few months, then found out it should have synchromesh in it. Bought GM stuff and changed it, trans performed just as it did with the Mobil 1. So the oil should be fine for a while.
