I have insomnia and an eBay account. These are two things that don't go well together, specifically when you see weird crap posted and go "sure, why not?". These are famous last words and now I am a proud[?] owner of a 1988 Yugo.

Although not a full-blooded sexual tyrannosaur of Italian power, it's a neat little car none the less

Perhaps you are asking why?

Now, I come from an air-cooled background and this is my first venture with anything like this... I am hoping maybe to have some guidance as I work to make this thing a shining light of as the title says: Serbo-Croatian Technology.

Any suggestions or ideas on how I should proceed with this project are appreciated..even connect with another Fiat 128 or Yugo user would be great. From my understanding parts from the 128 are pretty much universal with Yugos, so there might be a few changes coming up. I've also heard that Fiat x19 motors are a straight bolt in so I might be looking to do a similar swap in the near future.

Thought I would post this to keep myself honest and actually work on it [most likely to become lifeless for months maybe years as I try to work on this. Then I'll update..]

So yeah.

First of all, welcome to the farm or Forum as the case may be. Damn predictive voice text. Forum member SVREX built a neat little Yugo autocross and challenge car a few years back.  Complete with box flares if I recalled . He is a nice guy and a Fountain of Knowledge. PM him if you get a chance

That's a good-looking little Yugo

Well, at least it has the good looking wheels on it. I'll be following along to see where you take this one

That’s very flattering, but I didn’t do the majority of the building on the Yugo From Hell.

It was built by JThw8, improved by me, and campaigned by me as a Challenge car, and autocrosser.

Most fun I’ve ever had!

Very cool- I’m so glad to see another Yugo lover!!

In reply to SVreX :

Do you have any pictures of it you could share? I've only seen a few

Thanks so much, everyone and awesome Yugo SVrex!

As it currently stands I'm starting to build a list of to do's for myself. Since I come from an air-cooled background, i thought it may be cool to do a play on the cal look style that's popular with bugs [insert my patina out bug which is also on my to-do list to turn back it back into how it looked in the 80s when it was rally car.]

ANYWAY...

Keeping my Yugo to do list here to keep me accountable to work on this damn thing:

Body-exterior:

  • Clean exterior and interior
  • Patch any rust holes I find
  • Paint with Eastwood Rust-Preventer (top & bottom)
  • Paint inside of fenders with bed liner &/or Rust-Preventer
  • Bumpers– Install new or used
    • or go bumperless [not too sure as I may want to run a single fog light]
  • Repair or replace damaged front spoiler
    Windows
    • still considering, the seals look pretty decent

Front Suspension

  • Install 4” shockless narrowed beam

    -COMPLETED

  • Install 2" drop spindles

    -COMPLETED

  • Replace steering box
  • Clean and adjust disc brakes

Rear Suspension

  • Clean and adjust rear drums
  • Replace bump stops
  • Replace rear shocks

Wheels

  • Replace wheels
    • Still deciding what type of wheels I'd like to run.

Other items

  • Engine swap
    • Any ideas where I could find a new motor that's bolt in?
      • Not sure if it'd be feasible, but I'd like to get somewhere around 75-120 HP....
  • 5-speed conversion?
  • Reupholster front and rear seats
  • Clean and or Replace headlights and taillights
  • Update and upgrade gauges
    • Specifically, I may want to include a tac
  • Get Alignment
  • Install Fire Extinguisher
  • Flock Dashboard
  • Replace Carpet

You'll need to log in to post.
