also, results from ignition parts cannon are good so far. yesterday after driving for about 30 minutes, i sat with the car idling and air blasting, ambient 92 deg F, direct sun, for about 10 minutes. idle speed typically about 700 rpm. several times, the idle abruptly dropped for a split-second but did not stall. this is independent of compressor cycling. i think that whatever caused that to happen is probably the same thing that used to cause it to stall, only now it doesn't stall because the ignition system is super kick ass. IDK, just a theory. it never set a DTC when it stalled in the past, and it didn't set a DTC when the idle dropped yesterday.
I'm following both of your new threads and have been enjoying them. I have a soon to be 16 year old, and another 19 months behind him, so I'm interested in your fleet strategy works out. Ideally, I'd like to get both drivers involved in the purchase/maintenance/repairs of the vehicles.
Always good to see one in the win column!

if you can find a clean Epsilon-chassis 9-3, they're really nice. maybe mine is an anomaly in terms of how well it's been maintained, but i'd buy another one tomorrow.
the forester, maybe mine is an anomaly in how poorly it's been maintained, but i don't think i'd buy another one.
I'm a fan of the 9-3s, we had an '00 that was great until we had two kids in rear-facing seats and quickly outgrew it.
I've had limited experience working on Subarus, but I find they seem to rust pretty quickly here in the Northeast. Saabs, Volvos, Audis, and Mercedes seem to do better from a rust perspective, but I should probably stick to the Honda's and Toyota's that I'm familiar with (and have advanced OBD2 software for, as well).
Last week I had to make a run to our assembly plant, about 600 miles, so I took the Sube.
She starts right up and runs really well, and didn't give me any BS other than the standard P0457. Given the dog-E36 M3 that is today's used car market, we have decided to keep the Sube and deal with issues as they appear.
since AK1 goes to school way up north, we started prepping a JY set of OE wheels for winter use. She wants black spokes and glittery pink barrels, so that's what I'm working on. As received:
cleaned and primed:
rust-oleum pink glitter:
and the first one fully painted:
it's a silly way to spend the weekend, but she didn't want to drop $450 to have them stripped and powder coated, and I couldn't really argue with that.
Scoring major dad points dude!
I've never installed winters this early in the year, but AK1 goes to school 350 miles north of Detroit. She'll be dealing with snow before her next trip home.
my Dad would have referred to painting the barrels pink as "fly screwing", ie dedicating a lot of concentrated effort for a very small reward. You pretty much have to be under the car to see the pink barrels.
she also got a fresh cabin air filter. It was due.
Tomorrow she heads north. I'm halfway thinking about following her up in the E92 just in case.
Fluids checked, spare properly inflated (was at 14 psi LOL), windows cleaned, and she's off. I'll be watching via Location Services for the next 5 hours...
AK1 is back at school, Sube made the 350-mile drive with no new issues. Pix to follow.
On a side note, watching her drive away was harder than dropping her off.
When that time comes for the boys Im sure I'll be a wreck.
4 quarts 20w50 and a bottle of Lucas did not cure the rattle.
gonna drain 1.5 quarts and refill with more Lucas.
What's the issue you're chasing?

More glitter in the oil than in a stripper's cleavage. Plus rod knock.
Lucas and 20W50? I hope you're not going to pawn this car off on some unfortunate soul and it's just a case of "I'm going to use this car for my local Home Depot runs until it breaks." Sorry about your bad luck with this car, I get the feeling that the prior owner sold it for a reason.
Well, it seems you took a picture of tbe oul in my neon.....

I'm not that guy. My goal was to get it quiet enough that I wouldn't be afraid to drive it to the dealer as a trade-in. Now it's on CL, with fairly full disclosure.
Rod knock, anyone?
I respect that. I looked back in the thread and you "drained 2.5 qts of the blackest oil you'd ever seen." I think that explains why things went so sideways with this car- some very negectful prior owners. It's a shame, especially with the work you put in.

You don't think it all happened because it's a Subaru? Cause that's my theory.

Have a replacement in mind or just thinking about selling it first and then start looking for the replacement?
