Perhaps the wrong forum, but an early 80s 240D with a bad engine has come around.
Nuts & Bolts or the stuff sleepless nights are made of?
Thanks.

So far it has been pretty simple swapping a sbf into an amc. Benz is bigger, should be easier for the exhaust.
if i remember right i think the benz crossmember is in weird spot or something that makes it a hassle to work with a sbc/sbf oil pan? its been a while since ive looked into it, but i think besides that its about the same as swapping a small block into something it wasnt in before
IIRC the general issue with american V8 in an old benz (they're all laid out about the same) is the crossmember and steering centerlink (they used steering boxes well into the 90s, rear steer) are in an inconvenient spot and the steering box is in the way if you want headers. The few I've seen pictures of hack it all out for a rack and pinion and just kinda hope and pray they can fix the geometry they berkeleyed up later. I feel a hacked up front sump pan, mild clearancing of the crossmember and caring less about perfect exhaust flow would be a better solution.
FYI, that rust on the rear wheel arch could be a harbinger of much worse things.
I know from experience that 60's and 70's MBs can hide lots of rust in the trunk area.
Back on topic: I would try the SBC because surely there is already an oil pan out there somewhere that can accommodate the constraints of the steering system.
My wife loves old Benz's, and wants another one some day. I don't love maintaining old MB drive lines (because $$$), so if it happened an engine swap would be strongly considered.
