Annoying.

But legal.

One of the reasons I installed the turn down was so that the sound didn't just burble and pop straight out...

I hope to add lots of intake and supercharger noise to it as well tomorrow.

Then it may kill people with how annoying it sounds... IDK.

Mercedes made a lot of choices to suppress noise.

I am undoing all of them I think.

Just a little history on those Rikens...

Worked for Michelin in the mid-00's when Michelin actually owned shares in that company.  At the time, we were getting pummeled by the Asia-Pacific tires that were flooding the market at the time with pricing (and performance) we just could not match. We used Riken to plug the leak. Our engineers hand a hand in design and production processes.

I don't know what Michelins' association is with Riken now but I'm sure they're still benefiting from that alliance.

Oh and I picked up a one-owner 08 SLK with only 48K! It has a lot of the common issues (interior being the worst)  most owners deal with, but with its' low miles and low price, I'm looking at making a deceit profit off of it in the near future.

Ok, as we all know, time is getting short.... :)

I feel like this is the final exam I forgot to study for, and now I'm taking it in my underwear.

Like the dream, right? I'm not the only one?

Anyway... to document some of what I may gloss over in the blur of the next ten days:

Airbox mods:

It is a house of horrors, but I'm sure it's quiet. MB quiet in fact.

Before:

After removal of the snorkel and the intake muffler:

I didn't really maintaim the scale, but trust me, the intake to the box was pretty bad.

final box:

I won't be using the breather port, its gonna need a catch can.

The bypass valve will not go back on the intake either, as it seems to get a wee bit hot these days, and that is going to get worse! I hope.

The next item is the coil load simulator.

The ecu needs to sense a load on the compressor clutch coil circuit.

I don't trust the old coil due to some , ahem, development based learning opportunities.

But I do trust the 4 ohm, 100W power resister.

Electrically, 50w would do, but I'm adding in some for the under hood heat too.

For the record, a visual comparison of the old and new compressor pulley sizes:

This next picture shows two mods:

1. removal of the screens on the MAF.

2. The zener diodes I'll use to hold the signal voltage from going too high.

The idea here is that as long as the ECU see a normal range of airflow, it will be ok, and use closed loop or the MAF mapped A/F ratios as appropriate.

Problem is, that with the overdriven supercharger we are likely to see airflows in excess of the MAF and ECU design, and at lower rpms there will still be a lot more "extra" air to be added yet. That will put the mix way off of any table and waaayyyy lean.

To deal with that I am planning on adding an "electronic power valve".

Normally this would be described as an auxillary injector and controller.

Mine won't be nearly as sophisticated, and as such it reminds me of the old Ford and Holley power valve.

WOT=MOAR FUEL.

Electronic power valve:

This will be a FP regulator and 12v solenoid with a fuel only NOX nozzle at the throttle body intake pipe.

It will be primarily adjustable via the FPR and the nozzle jet.

I am also planning on actuating it with a 5v relay off of the MAF sensor return signal.

The 5v relay should pull in around 4v and I'll be able to use a resistor to fine tune that.

Sooo, let's count the assumptions:

I count at least 5 untested assumptions.

10 days remaining, uh actually 9.

Let's jest say that if I do even come close to getting done, I'll be bringing my jets to the track.

That's standard GRM Challenege right?

And this is ht e last time you will see these:

They are a budget item too far...

Any concern that the screen on the maf smooths the airflow and night cause issues if removed?

Some

it is easily replaced if needed.

I'd be really careful with your planned port machining.  I used to be heavily involved in the supercharged 3800 V6 (Eaton m90) world and there was a lot of porting tested back in the day.  You do not want to open up the front of the triangle as it allows the boosted air to recirculate back through the blower (loss of pressure).  Widening the back is usually acceptable, but you don't want to go beyond the centerline of each rotor as it allows for recirculation again.

The GenV m90 blower showed that you can get big gains (like 2psi) by opening the end of the port to th end of the rotors.  You're limited how far you can go, since this is also your machined mounting/sealing surface, but perhaps you can taper it to take advantage of the flow.

Here's my Paint version of what I'm suggesting.

Thanks for the suggestion and the information.

I will expand my reading on the subject. What you are saying makes sense, and is exactly the sort of misstep that I want to avoid.

Do you have any website or forum suggestions?

Unfortunately, no.  Most the great information was on Club GP forums, which are long gone.  You can try to glean a bit from looking at what the aftermarket players in that market sell - ZZPerformance, Intense Racing, perhaps others.

A couple other things I recalled since my past post is to leave the silencer ports (oval ones on the sides) alone and knife edge the main port.

For the transverse 3800, the inlet port to the blower was long and had lots of room for improvement.  Looking at this underhood picture you posted, it looks like it's a straight through design in your case.  It still might be worth a look for casting imperfections that can be cleaned up.

Maybe also take a look at the intake manifold where the blower mounts to?  Often there's material that can be removed to make the air flow path less restricted.

I'm not bringing a truck this year, but Chris is.... regardless we'll find a way.

This link has pictures of the Gen 3 vs Gen 5 outlet.  Note the difference in where the rotors end.  For the Gen 3, its right at the edge of the port.  For the Gen 5, it's actually like a quarter inch back from the edge.  Given this was developed by Eaton to make more horsepower, I'd say it's a solid thing to copy.

I wish I could attend, but life has kept the hurdles coming this year.  I'm loosely planning on next year, as my buddy Madhatr on here is building a C3 Vette for the Challenge.  Driving it from Wisconsin to Florida and back with some racing in the middle sounds like a great choice to me! laugh
