I posted in the GRM forums with some questions and had a few folks asking for more details on the car so I thought I would go ahead and start a build thread. I'll need to go backwards a couple of years and try and lay this out as it happened. I actually had no plans on buying this car, but I ended up bringing it home anyways because I just couldn't leave it there. This isn't a barn find story, but the car had been tucked away for more than 30 years, the last 20 or so in an underground parking garage.

I was just minding my own business when one day a former client of mine that I actually didn't even really remember sent me a message on FB that said " I know you like these wheels" with a link to the ad.

And he was correct, my favorite wheel for many years has been the American Racing 200S, and he had stumbled across a new on the box set a few hours from me. At the time I was out with my daughter on our weekly dad/daughter date, so I couldn't really run off and grab them, but I sent the seller a message that said " I will take them please" and within a few minutes I had sent him the funds. The next morning I woke up and thought to myself, I guess I should have asked him a few more questions, like what is the condition and when can I pick them up etc. A few messages later and I had him on the phone. We chatted a little and he informed me that he had purchased the wheels many years ago for a project car that he never ended up finishing. When I asked him what kind of car, he said "A 70 Camaro".... Of course I just had to ask "Whatever happened to that car?" He replied telling me that he still had the car, but that they were moving and he had finally come to the realization that he wouldn't ever get to it and that it also needed to be sold. I suggested that maybe I could have a look when I came to pick up the car and he said sure that would be fine.

A few days later I took the ferry to the mainland and went to pick up my wheels, what happened next was a bit unusual for me. I am not a Camaro guy, but once I saw the car, got the story and realized that it was actually pretty rare and desirable, I just couldn't leave it there. I ended up being there almost all day sorting through parts and trying to figure out how to verify if what he was telling me was real. The car was all original, numbers matching, right down the the starter, alternator, Holley carb etc.

Finally after several hours of back and forth and me paying way more than I thought I should, he won and I just shook hands and made the deal.

OK, now what? The car hasn't run on more than 30 years, he actually bought it not running as a project. I am there with no trailer, no plan and need to get the ferry back home. He says no problem I can have a couple days, but they are moving soon and he wants the car gone.

Here is a picture of the wheels one I got them home and un boxed, and also the car as it sat in the underground when he pulled the cover off.

Great wheels, car and story. I'm eager to see where this goes! Will the 200s be reunited with their originally intended home?

So was the original Bumblebee paint under the maroon paint the whole time?   How did you get it off without destroying the yellow paint and stripes?

So I head home with my new wheels and a few boxes of parts. On the ferry ride home reality starts to set in. I already have a non running project taking up the entire garage at home, getting this thing home will involve renting a trailer or a very expensive tow, and even when I get it here where the hell am I going to put it. My halfhazard plan was based on watching too many episodes of Roadkill. I would pull the plugs, oil down the cylinders, refresh the fuel, brake and ignition systems and cheaply as possible, retaining as many original parts as possible, get it running and driving and enjoy my super cool beater Z/28.

Except I have no time, and more importantly nowhere to make this happen. Our driveway is on a steep slope, and very narrow, and the garage is already taken. Also, the seller has made it clear no work can be done on site and and within hours of me leaving has called asking when I can come get the car.

As luck would have it, a friend of mine just happened to mention that he had a great Camaro guy that had a shop at his house, AND he was on the mainland. Now this is all happening during peak Covid, so everyone is maxed, has no employees, is booked for 6 months etc. So I call this guy (Gary) and tell him the story, he falls in love with the car and said he would be happy to help, offers to meet me there the next day with his truck and trailer. More importantly he says he can help me verify the originality of the car. I cant believe my luck, and agree to head back and meet him there.

The car was deep in an underground that had several tight turns... too tight for a truck and trailer. So, we decide we will use my wife's van to drag the car to the surface, we just need to pray that after more than 30 years sitting this thing will roll. We unload all the junk and parts from the car, pump up the tires, hook up the tow rope and head for the surface. Gary was great and jumped right in lending a hand and had the car loaded on his trailer within a matter of minutes. Next stop would be his shop, an hour and a half away for a closer look and some better assessment of the condition of the car.

Is that an EV-1 back there or is it some kind of Saturn?
