It sucks getting a flat tire. If you know how to change a tire, and go through the effort, it would really, really suck to get a second flat tire shortly after doing all that work.

In the course of doing my job, I spend a lot of time waiting for tow trucks to arrive. They never get there quickly, especially after dark.

The last time that I personally needed a tow truck, the cops said that the response time for AAA would be far too long, and we would have to use the next towing service on their list. Cash only, but AAA later sent me a refund check for that.

Wives, daughters and granddaughters don't always carry cash... but they do always have other negotiable commodities, and occasionally possess unique skill sets.

If you can afford to give her a car, you can afford to equip that car with a spare tire that is the same age as the other four on the car. You don't need to spring for a Michelin or a Blizzak. This is a case where you can get away one Chinese or Korean Walmart Special. You would be forgiven for that.

Don't place your granddaughter into a situation where she might need to enter into negotiations.

Really you'd have your wife or daughter change a flat tire in our winter weather?
Do you know how cold 40 below is?  Or doing it in a snow storm?
Me? I'd tell her to  Park the car  and call Uber.  Have her father deal with it.

I like* how you keep going back to 40 below tire changing.

Nobody is gonna do that E36 M3.  Not even the AAA guy.  However, its a good thing that only happens during storms and the average temp is much higher.

Stop using edge cases.  No one gives a E36 M3 about edge cases.  What do you plan to tell this girl when the tire blows out on a nice summer day?

*no, no I do not.

I'm very glad you asked that.
Let me explain to you winter driving.  We use special tires for winter. They are not all seasons.  They are winter tires. Not to be used above 45 degrees f

So come spring we take them off and put on summer tires.
I've explained this countless times above but I'm sure like most people you don't read everything.  That's OK. I try to explain things to everyone.
So in the summer she will have 4 more new tires and one of the winter snows.
Please read others above if you doubt me.

Hence the simple 4 door sedan with a six cylinder automatic.

I would call a car with two fuel tanks and two fuel pumps (that you have to manually switch) complex, not simple. A car that you probably have trouble finding some of the parts, drinks fuel like its going out of style and smells like exhaust is not simple.

I would also not consider and Audi simple as you mentioned above. I owned and Audi, it was given to me for free and I drove it for a year and sold it ... but its not what I would consider for a 16 year old.

A Corolla/Civic from the last 25 years is what I would consider simple, reliable and appropriate.

You are contradicting yourself.

That never used tire that hasn't even left the trunk is perfectly safe to use as a spare to drive 25 miles per hour to the nearest Discount tire in -40deg weather. My justification: It has full tread, nubs, and the original Italian air.

Option #1- Your loved ones end up stranded at the side of the road with NO spare tire

Option #2- Your loved ones have a Good Samaritan mount a tire that appears to be perfectly fine but delaminates and explodes 2 miles later at 60 mph and they crash into the concrete barrier wall.

It's safer to have NO spare than a crappy one that looks good.

Option 3 call Uber have her father deal with it.

Stupid. Option #3 is in fact identical to Option #1.

Seriously frenchy. You are way too smart for this. Are you ok?  Do you need medical attention?

She wanted something cheap.  ( I want it to be safe)    In all probability  she shouldn't try to change a flat on the side of a freeway ( or even a road)  especially  in weather that can get down to minus 40.

Does this even have an airbag? Since you're betting on her yeeting the car into a snowy ditch a few times?
