Microsquirts are used on jetskis, ATVs and such so bouncing around shouldn't be an issue for it.

Not sure what carb its running, but they are available for dirt bikes, may not be long enough, but same idea.

In reply to java230:

I'm pretty sure those are just for pilot adjustment on carbs that use a fuel screw under the carb instead of an air screw on the side. That is still helpful for use in big altitude and temperature changes, but we are talking main jet adjustability.

Ah ok, this is exactly why me and carbs don't get along I guess!

Microsquirt is all surface mount, I wouldn't be too concerned with vibration, hit the board with some conformal coating if you want to generally beef it up a bit and add moisture resistance. Mount on the passenger side of the firewall. Or go nuclear, buy some potting compound and pot it or pot a normal MS board.

In reply to GPz11:

its not so much bouncing around like a jetski as its the constant percussion of the drive cogs against the tracks. its alot more than a vibration or the occasional bump in the road.

In reply to alfadriver & BrokenYugo:

true. microsquirt is probably the way to go and I like all of the insulating ideas for sure but the firewall is far to hot for ECU mounting. it will have to go in the back of the small cab just like the passengers do when they cant handle the hot front seat anylonger

Its hard to appreciate the engine bay heat situation on this machine without going for a ride. imagine how hot a beetle would get if you sealed up the bottom and ALL the air from the doghouse had to come back up from under the engine and out the top. the only thing I have experienced that comes close is when I take the audi 10valve turbo to las vegas in june but that's still not as bad. the kristi gets hot to the point that I can't hold the aluminum lever on the dash that tilts the body. its like a pan handle on a hot stove. the cold enviroment is not enough to offset the air coming out of the engine. surprising they didnt come with any sort of temp gauge. it will be getting one.

If it's not hot enough to mess up old polyester fiberglass it's probably not hot enough to mess up modern electronics, that said it's cramped enough up there that it's probably better off protected under the seats.

haha true.

snowtrac owners (one in particular) are already talking smack about the lack of speed. . . . but I didnt even put it in 4th gear low in that race. a little more power to start in a higher gear will change everything. haters gonna hate. I just hold my cards to my chest and slowly keep improving.

I'm enjoying the fact that there is a community of snowcat owners in the GJ area who drag race up on the Mesa.

thanks guys. I think next time the challenge will be a powder hill climb or "high mark"

also if anyone is in the area and interested, we are planning on attending the first annual Vail snowcat jamboree on march 18-19. its all going down on top of vail pass on saturday with a trek into montezuma on the back side of arapaho basin on sunday. should be a good time. here is a rally sticker I came up with for the event. even if you dont have a cat, im sure people will be offering rides.

More timing advance will probably help it come out of the hole.

according to the authority on the matter, the pontoon roller tuckers are, to this day, king of the hill (even though my kristi dvd's say otherwise) should be interesting. kristi's are rare enough that most in the snowcat world dont even know the limits of the machine, then I showed up, caution to the wind

In reply to BrokenYugo:

I agree. do you think im wasting time with the industrial distributor? seems like they have very little advance to begin with.. been thinking about switching to vacuum advance and an electronic pickup. take the points out of the equasion for reliability's sake.

I would absolutely ditch the industrial distributor. They are made to run something at a set RPM forever, not changing.

Yeah, the usual vacuum/mechanical unit is probably what you're after.

finally got the new fuel pump in the mail so I installed it this afternoon. took a couple weeks to get here from the czech republic but I like it better than most electric pumps on the shelf these days

I find it interesting that one pump was manufactured in new york 55 years ago and the other was made in west germany 30 some years ago but they are the same brand and nearly identical. new one sounds much better. think Im good to go for the vail cat jamboree but I would like to get a distributor with more advance before then. I have a body, just need a few more parts to put it together.

Hey 2K, quick question about how you flushed the tank with muriatic acid? Did you fill partially with hot water first and add the acid, or just straight acid? And please go play, take lots more pics, and upload them. Love seeing them!
Thanks
Paul

hey paul, i used straight acid and would occasionally drain it out and filter it back in with paper coffee filters. i must have done that about 8 times before i was satisfied with how clean it was. hope that helps

A couple weeks back we attended the first annual colorado snowcat jamboree and while I cant say the weekend went without a hitch. . . I never saw a tow strap and for me thats a mark in the win column. here's how it went down.

woke up late friday, checked the air pressure on the cat and the trailer, then loaded up and hit the road. everytime we stopped someone wanted to chat, admire or ask just exactly what is that thing on the trailer?? but everyone seemed to dig the machine. lots of thumbs up from passers by. we arrived at camp hale headed up the hill towards ptarmagain ridge and got a little lost for a moment, but the kristi climbed on. once near the top i stopped to check the map and let the machine cool off, i noticed a small oil leak coming from the oil pressure sensor i had rigged up for my oil light. nothing major so i topped off the oil and tractored on. I finally spotted the group of snowcats parked ontop of machine gun ridge so we headed that way. half way up the hill, right as a couple machines came down the kristi just shuts off. no idea whats happened i couldnt even get out on the steep incline without rolling back. luckily the nice gentleman in the prinoth pulled behind me and set his blade down to act as a wheel chalk. popping the hood it only took a few seconds to spot the problem. my coil had broken away from the fan shroud mounting and pulled one of the wires in the process. easy fix with some zipties and a new spade connector, we were motoring again. thanks to everyone who offered to help us out. it was great to have so many helping hands and not one negative kristi comment was heard. a nice surprise to say the least!

the rest of the weekend went well. got to meet lovethemvws, gave him a ride before the end of the day. looking forward to seeing his kristi on the hill next year. my battery hold down shook itself loose as did my air cleaner and throttle linkage but again, all easy fixes.

the last issue we had happened about 200 yards from the trailer. motoring along we watched as the driverside exhaust stack broke off just above the hood and fell under the track. so much for my original factory exhaust! time to upgrade and repair for next season.

overall we had a great time at the first annual colorado snowcat jamboree. the KT-3 was very well recieved and got much love from everyone. glad we could be a part of this event that is sure to grow in the coming years. thanks to everyone for the warm welcome, helping hands, advice, zipties, burgers, moonshine, and good vibes. this is one event we wont be missing out on in the future.

/\ this LS swapped bombardier was easily best of show in my opinion

the sprites were out in full force, cool to see so many together

this guy had 2 rubber track tuckers. the orange 4 four door pictured above was a fuel injected beast that suffered a broken 5th wheel plate the first day so he brought out the standard cab on day 2

and finally, a little video my wife and I put together of the event. what a blast!
