Here's the set-up to shoot for: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/185180719542329/

1.7 built to 2666? 10,000 rev limit? 340 HP? I'll settle for dual 40mm Webers, I don't think the other special parts are in my budget.

I moved it along a little further today. I focused on stripping out the interior of the yellow one. The kind of stuff you wear a mask for, then burn your clothes when you're done.

I don't like moving 'barn cars' into my garage until after the barn has been removed from them. It is too hot to do much work in the full afternoon sun. Soon I'll move it inside and see about pulling the drivetrain.

Save that shifter.. Some of them broke and were poorly / incorrectly welded.

Heads up, one of the challenges of this combinations is rowing the gear box.  Starting with the shifter.

I will be following this "fix", with some interest.

My 1.5 car garage is always a mess. I have long planned to empty everything out - move it all to the driveway, then arrange it back in good order. Having a dozen+ cars that I maintain makes it easy to say, "After I get done with *this* car, I'll finally get it all organized."

The '99 Boxster that I have been working on is still almost done. Yesterday I replaced a drop link and front strut that was blown. I came very close to painting the front calipers red to match the rear calipers, but the arrival of severe thunderstorms said, No... not today. I think I will sell it with caliper painting as a suggested first project for the buyer. The 80 mph gusts of the storm shredded my cheapest car cover and some water got into the car. Since I am drying the carpet anyway, I may swap in a nicer pair of seats. ...Oh wait, this is supposed to be about 914s.

With the '99 Boxster out of the garage (it was only 1/2 way in), the yellow 914 will go in. I plan to drop the engine and transmission, then figure out what else to remove or cut away. I like 914World.com, but since I have been using Wayne Dempsey's DIY's on the Pelican Parts web site for Boxster stuff I am more familiar with the flow and finding what I want. There is a nice engine drop checklist here: 914 Engine Drop that I will be using. I love working with a simple checklist.

With two 914s and nine wheels between them, there were still not four good tires that would hold air. In order to make the cars roll without great effort, I took a pair of the Mahle wheels that had temp-spare tires on them and mounted an unused pair of Toyo R888s on them. It may be optimistic, but I hope to wear these tires on the black car when it is running and I have the chance to sort it out.

I would suggest that you remove anything that has a part number on it from the yellow 914. There is a lot of overlap in the air cooled Porsche world, and everything has value. Part numbers are your friends.

I would completely remove the half shafts before dropping in engine/tranny and the carb as well unless you enjoy cussing your self out.
You can make a engine removal tool using a piece of wood bolted to your jack. There is a flat spot on the tranny and the engine for the board to set.  I've done the removal myself but the first time it's definitely better to hav3 a helper.

^Gorgeous. I like Woody's concept pic, too. I used to haunt AUTOATLANTA, they always had some beautiful stuff. They had a very doable 904 kit that was my dream car.

Yesterday I shuffled cars around and put the yellow 914 in the garage. Slowly. Step-by-step. It was down hill, the steering is locked, the rear calipers (parking brakes) are removed, and there's no fluid in the brake reservoir. I used a jack to pivot the car.

In the evening I removed the engine and transmission all except for one bolt.

In the morning, I made one bolt irrelevant.

I did make an engine removal tool from scrap wood after looking at some pics. Very helpful working with one jack to make it balanced and smooth. The axles remained in the hub. They did not want to remove easily and I had the car high enough for them clear the engine when lifted.

I'm not sure what I want to do next. Probably best to figure out where I'm going to put all the parts.

I didn't take the car apart any further. I realized that my garage was too cluttered to pull apart another car and lay the parts in the detritus of Honda-Volvo-Geo-Audi-VW-Toyota-Ford truck-Porsche stuff that is knee deep on the floor. I took 500 lbs of junk to the dump and built another shelf from 2x4s and scrap wood. I cleaned and put away a lot of my tools and found a lot of others that I hadn't seen in a while. I have EXTRA 10mm sockets now in 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2". The garage is still a mess, but I have good momentum to keep it going through the week before I dig deeper into the yellow car.

Today I started a work week of 12 hour 7 am to 7 pm  shifts. With that, I can plan for up to an hour of projects in the evening, but nothing major. On the plus side I have lots of free time at work that I can do things. Today I brought the carburetor to check it over and start cleaning it.

It will need a complete rebuild to run well, but with a general spray, soak and brush, it may be good enough to see if an engine will run. I don't want to pull it apart until I have a rebuild kit in hand and until today I didn't even know what model it was. It's a Weber 32/36 DFAV: (D) Twin, (F) Left-handed, (A) aqua choke, (V) Vertical. There's some very well made videos on disassembly and rebuild here.

I almost bought a rebuild kit just now, but I'm going to hold off. I may buy a different set-up all together. Dual Carbs, MS, or just a new single carb set-up. I don't even know if either of my engines is practical to run yet. I drained about a quart of water out of this engine when I was pulling it. Clean, clear water came out when I pulled the drain plug for about 20 seconds before I saw any oil. At least I know that it's not intermix with coolant. Hopefully there was a good coating of oil on all the internals, but this car sat for a long time. I may drain the oil and pull the carb off the black car in one of my evenings this week, just to see....

Mike's Carbs has a great selection of carb rebuild kits.  The great thing about them is that he knows his E36 M3 and provided you tell him the correct info he'll get you the exact kit for your carb

Given the intended cooling medium, I would say there is more coolant in it now since you drained the "lubricant" outcheeky. The H2O does not bode well for the case castings though.

I haven't heard too many good things said about a single 32/36 in a 914 application.  A pair of Weber or Delorto downdrafts would be pretty good if you can find some original Italian ones.  The Spanish versions from RedLine and the various Chinese knock-offs seem to have variable quality -  from so-so to horrible.

The twin Weber 40s on the CL engine I purchased for the Outlaw Bug had set 10 years.  (ran when parked)

I worked on them for days.  Used new Redline kits.  Never got them correct.  Sent them off to a specialist with tools and flowbench.  $500 later I had beautiful working carbs.  The cost hurt, but in the long run it was well worth it every time i mash the right pedal.
