Your friend sounds like he needs something to spark a desire to live life again.  I can empathize.  I hope you can arrange the engine near Iowa City.

(Did any of you guys look up and see what a "Metro Mite" is...?)

Yeh,  you got that right.  He really looks like a lost soul. His dad left him a successful Chevy dealership and he ran it into the ground.
Then he got involved with drugs, and lost the rest of the things he had left including a wife / home/ family.  Went to jail for non payments of••••••  got out of jail and through probation somehow. But wound up being a really serious drinker.
Now all he has is the minimum social security and a friend who allows him to house sit during the off season ( Florida summer,  Minnesota winter)
That and an old broken Vintage race car.

I'm disappointed.  None of yall have gone out on a limb and mentioned...

Rotary.  12a or 13b would be perfect for this and probably NEVER need a rebuild in this application.

Money and lots of it, in 2022.  Also they are amazingly big in areas.

The problem with a lot of modern engines is they have no easy button for rear drive.  Spend $300 on an engine and $2000 bolting it in.   An expensive engine that fits is often the cheapest option.

I don't have any experience  with rotary engines.  Besides won't really fit with wire wheels.

It is definitely the easiest option.  Really it's the right option too.  If the cost is a bit high for his budget Maybe I'll make a lucky purchase or two.    Or find some parts I forgot I had.
I'm pretty leery because I've dealt with addicts before.  I need to see him commit. Put something of himself in. As they say, start digging the hole.

I'm not in a hurry to "solve" his problem.  Like I said I've dealt with addicts before and you don't tend to "solve" their problems  until they become fully invested it it.
