I give you a 10 on bench racing. Down to a 7 on pulling a car apart. Big question is can you put it all back together?

You just helped me make a big decision regarding Corvair interior.   Guess what kind of seat I'm gonna run?

*Bench* seat, motherberkeleyer!

And the answer to the big question is Yes.

Yup. I concur, you can get it all back together.

By 2023.

Running by 2025.

Competitive by never.

Tonight I worked on pulling the C4 front suspension apart so I can get it properly clean, which I hope will lower the odds of setting it on fire when I weld it into the Corvair unibody.

Yep, inside of this tie rod end looks fine.  Yes, really.  I’m just going to replace the boot and refill it with fresh grease.

Took that pic so I have a record of as-received shim stacks, in case they get mixed up in cleaning.

And that’s where I left off for the night.  Shocks are holding some preload in the spring, so I’m gonna read the Shop Manual tomorrow and see how I was supposed to have done this.  :-/

I have a set of brand new Energy Suspension boots I never used on mine. I’ve listed them here & locally multiple times with zero interest. They’re yours for the cost of shipping if you want them.

Patience, my friend.  I have to pick up my Gastropod before I can pick up my transaxle. ;-)

You’re probably right about MONZORA, which is why I’m buying a Gastropod this weekend.  It’s a green Miata.  Hope you don’t mind.

More parts removal and cleaning on the C4 front suspension.  Removed ARB, steering rack, and a couple pounds of caked-on oily crud.

Tomorrow I will chop off the frame in front of the firewall, Saturday AM I’ve got a guy picking up what’s left of the C4, Saturday PM I pick up my Gastropod, and Sunday I’ll move the Corvair to center stage.

I’ve already maxed out my recoup, so I can only use it as trade bait.  Should be enough to cover the LT4 Hot Cam Kit, though.

Tonight was more of the same, cleaning and disassembly, with the added excitement of not killing myself by abruptly releasing stored energy from the front leaf.  So far, so good.

I am sad to report that the C4 isn’t going away until Tuesday evening.  Dude had a trailer issue.

In the entire history of the GRM Challenge, only one competitor has had sufficient jam to race a Corvair. That’s me. And in the entire history of the GRM Challenge, only one vehicle has towed a Corvair to the event. At this time, I am proud to present to you my latest vehicle purchase:

2001 GMC Sonoma ZQ8, 188k, 4.3L V6, 5-speed manual, with crank windows and no keyless entry. Really, aside from ZQ8, A/C, and 4.3, I think she’s about as base as they come. My buddy Jason bought her new in 2001, and she pulled my Corvairs to the Challenge in 2002-2004. He sold her to a friend in 2016, and I bought her from that guy. If all goes to plan, she retains her title as the only vehicle to tow a Corvair to the Challenge. And if things go tits-up with the Corvair, I’ve got a ZQ8 Gastropod. There’s a matching spare in the bed, plus the OE rims with nice Winter tires, two spare ABS ECUs, the OE dash (she’s currently sporting a replacement dash made for double-DIN radio where the OE was 1.5-DIN), and a few odds and ends. Maintenance folder is about 2” thick and goes all the way back to Day 1.

yes, I’m kidding.  And thanks!  When Jay first bought it I said “lemme know when you’re ready to sell.”  Then when he was ready to sell in 2016 I didn’t have any spare $ in my pocket.  I need a truck for the Corvair build, so I was pretty pumped when Jay said “hey, I think my buddy’s looking to get rid of the Sonoma.”

She’s also got helper bags on the rear, a Class 3 frame-mount hitch, trailer brake controller, and a really thick rubber bed floor protector.

So I know a guy that has the challenge budget and daily driver friendly way to set these things up 2 autocross and handle incredibly well. However he's still quite irate about losing his lucky number. So he won't tell you a damn thing until I tell him to.

You'll need to log in to post.
