Good buy!!!

today was a shopping day, scored this mess of "removed on day 2" C5 parts for $200.
Gonna sell most, only wanted the air box parts and exhaust. I'm also gonna sell the C7 Z06 NPP dual-mode exhausts I bought a couple years ago. Should net a good chunk of cash to keep the project moving.
Bottom of the page is sad.
A corvair with sport exhaust...oh my!
Not that a corvette powered, mid-engined, corvair isn't cool enough but...

Good updates shouldn't be the last post on the page. They don't get seen
Might go ahead and hillbilly my race exhaust:
there were 2 of these in the $10 box o pipes I bought the other day.
In all seriousness, I'm working on repackaging the C5 exhaust, because scope creep. C5 mufflers are transverse-mount:
but the Corvair is narrower than the C5 so the tips crash in the center. To remedy this, I'm moving the tips outboard by 1-1/2" per side, and doing a cut/paste on the over-axle pipes to mate to MonZora's header collectors.
with muffler cans as far outboard as possible, the inboard tip crosses centerline. But they're the right height to poke through a modified rear air grille:
the 65 piece is solid in the center, where the 66-up part has a full-width vent. So I'm trading my 65 piece for a 66.
And you might not see it in this pic, but here's my new x-pipe:
One muffler and a center dump like a million cars out there right now. They kind of drive me nuts about their commonality but I have 2 two tip center exhausts right now on the Cayman and the R.

preach approves of this post.
Homemade version though so as not to take the budget hit.

Im hoping he does make his own from a water heater
Cause im planning on making my own for the amc and want to see how he does it first....
Can you shorten the cans or even the pipe coming off the tips to get them centered?
I've shortened and modified a TON of mufflers and silencers through the years. It's pretty easy, depending on how they are setup. I usually take a cut off right at the flanged area, knock the end off and go from there, depending on how they are setup. I've also cut the tops off many times to modify the internal baffling, and either add or remove packing material, as well as removing the mfr BS stamped into them, so can be fully polished, minus all the extraneous stuff stamped in them.
And I just found a picture of inside of the c5 cans. SUPER easy to shorten the backside of the cans, if you needed to, in order to move the tips and inlet "further" outboard.

Two tips?!?! That's cute. MonZora will have four.

Great minds! I'm shortening the outlet pipes to put the tips where I need them:
And in reply to Duster :
I still don't know WTF's happening with that Dr Gas thing.
In reply to AngryCorvair (Forum Supporter) :
Awesome! That'll work for sure. What works great for cleaning all the crap off the pipes is the little 2 and 3" brown scotchBrite roloc disc's for an angle grinder. Will remove all that crud nice and fast without removing a bunch of material from the tubing itself. Makes welding easier the cleaner the stuff is. I always hose and wipe down the inside of the tubing as well with some lacquer cleaner after running an 80 grit 1-2" flap wheel inside the tubing real quick. Just to clean up the inside edge of the weldment. Welding used tubing isn't fun, but 5 minutes of prep makes it so much easier.
Project looks great man, keep it up.

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I will definitely do some clean-up work before I do any more welding on them. I quit last night before tacking the first one, and when I got home from work today I had 5 minutes free before dinner. I didn't even change clothes, just threw on the mask and grabbed the TIG torch. Whatever that paint / undercoat is, it smells like ass when it's burning.
my high-dollar jig:

Sweet.

Think of a spintech puffler thats also an exhaust tip.
Yes, its that awesome. Couple of the vintage stock car guys run them.
Finished drivers side muffler outlets tonight. Cut off, shortened, dressed, jigged, tacked, and finish-welded all I could reach with the TIG.
before, 2-3/4" from can to tip:
after, 1-1/4" from can to tip:
I'm pretty happy with the alignment of the tips:
and that's a good place to quit for the night.
Second muffler mods complete. They're just propped up in the pic below to give an idea of how it'll look with 4 tips. I dig it.
I've been told stock C5 mufflers are really quiet. I have an attached garage and live in a nice sub so I'm OK with that.

Looks good. Was hoping for an x arrangement for middle pair; to change the exhaust note. Maybe post-challenge for added burble or less drone on the hwy. Then there is always extra concourse points in case its close.
