Is it possible to turn off the option to leave comments on a thread?
If you had an admin lock it, then you couldn't add to it. So it's a double edged sword.
If you don't want comments or interaction with the forum on your build, post it elsewhere, like your own blog, and post the links here, etc.
Thanks for the info, just wondered if it was possible. A separate blog might be best, depending.
Like to share the build and info, wouldn't mind reasonable comments and questions, just don't want a whole lot of, "What you SHOULD have done is . . . " kinda crap, you know?
Rather just post the progress than defend or clarify any of my decisions during the progress. Been thinking about and researching and seriously planning out and gathering parts for this project for a couple of years or more; I know exactly what I want and don't want for this ride, got everything ready to assemble, and thought that others here might like to see and read about it going on, but . . .
I'll see what's involved in setting up a blog, otherwise I'll have to take my chances here. Maybe with a caveat up front.

Quoted for truth. Without the comments and the occasional +1, I start to think I'm talking to myself.
I think you're worrying about something that doesn't really exist on GRM- I haven't seen anyone get big "YOU SUCK YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE IT LIKE THIS!!!11!" responses here. I build uglier and worse crap than most here, I think, and when someone does chime in with a "you could do it better like this" it's always constructive, useful, and well deserved criticism.
You could just write up the details and post it in the Garage section of your membership profile. People can comment on the end result, but it generally doesn't clutter up your info so much.
Did you get the Saab?
Nobody here is going to be a jerk about your choices. The most I've ever seen is a simple "why did you decide to do it this way, out of curiosity?" sort of thing. You could build a stanced plastidipped 'drift' Miata with a crown royal shift boot and I bet you'd just get complete silence rather than any criticism.

What you SHOULD do is.....
Ignore the people who tell you what to do.
Of course that doesn't happen too much here, except when we're trying to help based on our own collective experiences, etc and often it's phrased such as, "what I might have done is X....."
GRM is pretty decent, especially in the Build Thread area. Off-Topic can get a little rowdy, like those nice old ladies at the end of your wine tour, they are mostly harmless, just don't bend over in front of them. :)
Just write in the past tense. If it's in the history books there's less of a chance of people doing the ol back seat driver thing.
I understand where the OP is coming from, actually, and it's why I don't have a build thread on this forum.
There are certain people here who are extremely argumentative if they don't agree with your approach, reasoning, etc.
"Off-Topic can get a little rowdy, like those nice old ladies at the end of your wine tour, they are mostly harmless, just don't bend over in front of them" BWaHahahahahaaaaa!!!!!
I personally find the discourse between two experienced people arguing a point of view to be quite valuable and educational, not to mention entertaining.
I suppose I can understand the mindset of not wanting to be criticized, but a lot can be learned by reading the justification of a certain approach, as well as the corresponding success or failure.
You do see a lot of people telling people how best to do things, but as said above, it's generally from a constructive standpoint and don't mind listening to others opinions.

This is what I would suggest as well. You can add updates as often as you wish, too.
Thanks all—
I loved the posting in the past tense idea and the old ladies at the end of a wine tour . . . if the comments are as funny and constructive as those above, maybe an open to suggestions build thread would be a fine idea after all.
Gun shy I guess. When you're all alone at home working on something, everything that you do is right, well appreciated, and highly praised (by you!) Out in an open forum things change. Just have to sure that I can roll with that and not start pouting and split the forum. Did that on the 356 Registry because nobody seemed to understand why I had to put a Beetle pan under my '55 Pre-A . . .

Speak for yourself! When I'm working alone everything I put on my dumb E36 M3ty cars is a dumb E36 M3ty idea executed in a dumb E36 M3ty way by a dumb E36 M3ty mechanic
There's no way some forum comments are going to be more bothersome than my internal monologue!

I all the build threads I have read here have been pretty tame. There's some curiosity questions from time to time about the why, check out the Rice Rod thread, but rarely will anyone here question or criticize the choice because it isn't "Factory Original" or "Too special to be cut up." I think most of us have a deep rooted disdain for those people.
Personally I've found them to be a deep well of knowledge to tap. I've learned way more here about my projects than marquee specific forums.
Crap I am going to put air ride on my RX-3 due to some encouragement here and my MS3 "only" has the baby drop in turbo and the cush Koni/Eibach combo due to my choices. No one here batted an eye but I'm a Bob Costas who likes not being beaten to death and deaf on the MS3 forums.

Here if anything people would be surprised you used a VW belly pan instead of fashioning one from two hot water heaters, preferably ones you didn't pay cash for.
You're far more likely to get an offer like "hey, I have this clutch spring from an isetta sitting on the shelf, if you combine it with this vw throttle linkage, it'll fix you're stuck gear shift issue" than to be hassled for not being more stock or not using the parts made from Angel tears and unicorn farts.
I'll join some others in saying it feels like I'm talking to myself in my build threads, but the advice and education from those that chime in or just from reading others is priceless.
I try to be entertaining And I really want to be Helpful, most of the time I feel like I said something wrong, Ovid and Flem make Eloquint Post's And I Always Feel like I shouldn't have Responded at all, sorry Jim. I Dig the Input Others Give, Like there's More Than One Way to Skin A Cat.
Being fairly new here (Jan17), the overall tone is definitely one of POSITIVE reinforcement.....yes, every once in awhile an a$$hat sneaks in only to be verbally eviscerated unmercifully.....you're in a far better hive, enjoy the ride.
