I second that emotion.
Ok, looking for input - I discovered the Weiand intake + carb does not clear the hood...forget about an air cleaner.
I could possibly find an Edelbrock Performer, which is known to clear, I could cut a big berkeleying hole in the hood, or I can get it running as-is, then decide.
I'm kinda against cutting the hood...for some strange vague reason C4's with an air cleaner sticking out the hood have always irked me - even before I liked them. But I could possibly be swayed... I don't really want to mount this intake & tune the carb, then switch it out. That just seems like extra work. But who knows if/when I'll find a budget-friendly non-RPM Performer or Torker II intake?
What sayeth thee???
Because I have a BB Tall Deck block with a Dart Intake I knew that was going to be a problem So........ I was going to Cut down Both Sides of the Hood Hump Just Above the hood line and Raise it up so everything Clears then Glass the split back with it up a couple inches, Kinda like the old L88 hood. it would look really good and not HIGH like the Tunnel Ram stuff the Drag racers do.a man up here has cut a hole in his and hates the look and so do I.
Aren't most stock GM intakes pretty short? I know most are spread bore but there might be something there.
Don't know if that is budget friendly, maybe swap or sell what you got. Long distance shopping with other people's money........ain't it grand.
It looks like the carb pad height on the Performer is 4.27". While I couldn't find a spec on the Weiand Stealth, I'm measurin it right at 5".
I have an offer for an even swap of my Weiand for a Performer, so I'll probably go through with it even if I find out later that it still doesn't clear...although it supposedly does.
Day-90(4-hours):
I ended up being able to use the stock-length belt, so although I did get a new one since the original one seems useable I'll keep it around for the Challenge so I can save ~$20 off my budget.
I also went ahead & bolted down the intake. For now. Maybe.

I'm contemplating something like that, though cheaper and way more redneck, but I wonder how much the reduced visibility would impact autocross. As it is(for me anyway) the visibility isn't great due to the low seating position. I guess I can always set a box on the hood to approximate the height and see.
the silver car is more a factory height, the yellow is the Taller one, both can be bought, do like I suggest and I can send you plenty of glass and resin w/ hardner with NO budget hit. Obliviously, with what I have done to mine, I went out an was given Plenty left over from the Late model cars.
I'm sure you will figure out the visibility and vehicle-perimeter once you've hit enough cones; I believe in you! And I would believe in you even more, with an L-88 cowl on it!
Or go back to FI and I will buy what you got, and Pay for the rebuild kit.a performer isn't any better than a stock Manifold, Or I will send you a Q-jet and an aluminum Factory Intake, your call but a Q-jet is better than an eddy carb.

Thanks for the offer! I'm going try my hand at fiberglass repair with the cracked 1/4-panel first...though I'll probably just cover it with stickers for the Challenge, then deal with it later.
Just pokin' at ya, but seriously that is on the table for you. maybe should have written in a (Santa) clause for carbs LOL

Agreed 100% - it's expertise from people like you, and the willingness to share it freely with the rest of us, that makes mayhem like mine possible.
Lucky for me the small fortune it cost to learn was someone else's, the 40 years tho.. thank you pete. If I die before I share it will be wasted time. some things still baffle me Like electricity,( I can solve a series/ paralell circuit on paper)(but can't spell).Oh yea and People.
Day-91(8-hours):
Not counting multiple trips to the parts stores... I made good progress though - I got the exhaust connected & flex plate cover installed, so I should be finished underneath the car. The fuel lines are all connected and ready to be pressure tested, and all the coolant lines are connected & filled.
I'm not thrilled with the position of the regulator, but there's just not much room to work with the stock fuel lines. Right now the lines are the only thing holding it in place, but I'll cut a piece of flat stock & bolt that to the intake and regulator.
So I decided to clear all the crap out of the way and see how bad the clearance issues are. It turns out I'm just a dumbass and the carb clears the hood with ~2.75" to spare. Conveniently, I found an air cleaner that exact height.
I'll need to dimple the center for a recessed nut, but it clears the hood!
I still need to fasten down the carb, attach the cable brackets, then figure out how to set the TV cable in a non-OE setup. Then I can finish rebuilding the front brakes, install the new master & bleed the system...and fix one more problem I discovered: somehow while the steering wheel was off I must have screwed something up, because I can't turn it and it seems like it's hung up on the turn signal stalk.
One question too, just to confirm thermostat housings with a built in o-ring do not need either a gasket or RTV, correct?
Thermostat housing: supposedly. Never had an o ring type seal no matter what. But thats mopar....
Tv cable: holley makes a bracket set. Arm on carb, throttle cable/tv cable retainer. Two separate parts. They work and let the 700r4 live.
Also, id look for a drop base air cleaner thats larger diameter. I remember reading somewhere that the smaller filters really dont flow much of anything. A 14x3 is pretty much minimum for 300hp if I remember right.
[Edit...I posted before advancing to the last page of posts...so my post seems moot now, D'oh!]
I picked up an old Holley intake manifold the other day. I didn't realize I wanted it until AFTER I bought it (package deal of 1 Holley aluminum intake and 1 Edelbrock Performer for $75...the deals are out there!). What I mean by that is when I started looking at the Holley intake I realized it is LOW. It might not be any better than a factory intake...but it will accept square- or spread-bore carburetors.
It might be one to keep an eye out for.
You're in luck that you've got the heads that use the old angle on the 4 center manifold bolts. (at least, that's what I think you have).
In reply to Dusterbd13:
Thanks!
The throttle cable bracket I got has a mount for the TV cable. I've seen the Holley part listed, but I'm still not clear what it's for - the TV cable will attach to the bottom of the throttle lever, and the pic of the Holly part just looked like an L-shaped bracket with a stud at each end?
This is definitely a temporary air cleaner setup. I'm hoping to adapt the hat from a Dodge tbi setup, then run a tube forward and use the stock C4 filter & mount.
