Would enlightening be close enough?

I think that's about as perfect a word for the R as any, it sounds terrifying and mysterious, but is mundane in reality.

I felt the same when I had to take the intake manifold out of our R. just looking at all of the "stuff" crammed into the engine bay is was a little daunting but as I worked through it it was not so bad.

When you travel and meet new people with different cultures and realize that we're all very similar, it's humanizing. Cars that you don't know, especially complicated ones, are.......not scary exactly, not intimidating, but they have a certain dark mystery about them. And then you take them apart and work with them and fix them and they become simpler. It's really very satisfying.
This is so true... and also why I shy away from a lot of good deals on cars that are outside of my 'comfort zone'- I just don't want to invest the time I know that would be required to learn another manufacturer's quirks down to every nut.
I find that i don't really 'trust' a car until i've been into its guts. If it's new enough that i'll never need to work on it before the 'relationship' ends, then i just never connect with it as anything other than an appliance.
you fall into a nice groove of things being removed without any hangups, and then suddenly it's 5 hours later and you have a half-car and parts scattered as far as the eye can see. It's like Anti-ADD.
The two sort of go hand-in-hand: Hyper Focus

So, you're all done?
Backing up just a bit, I ran up to Northern Tool this morning and grabbed casters which total a bit over 3,000 lbs of capacity. I figured that should be enough, factor of safety and all. In case anyone wants to pull their own R63 motor, the platform is 2 feet by 2 feet and the the board for the transmission is four feet long. Or you could just borrow mine.
Then I just took the rest of the stuff apart. Followed the directions. Not much too it. The cooling system is absurdly complicated, I had to bleed the air off the struts, and I did have to empty the AC as there just isn't room. In fact I had to wiggle the engine a bit to get it to clear everything on it's way out. I'm going to need a big ass shoehorn to get this back in.
No fooling around eh?
You're making the rest of us look bad, maybe go play with the kids or something.

I had an alarm screaming at me so I could get cleaned up to get the kids when I was pulling the last bolt.
Having the kids in school gives me 3-5 hours a day to really focus. I'm trying to take advantage of that.
Choir concert tonight and then maybe back out there to pull the valve covers? Christmas stuff is fast approaching. I think the heads are going to stay on until after the new year. I do have some other stuff to get done around the house.

You're one to talk.
Good job, mazdeuce!
Kind of driving Mrs. Deuce nuts talking about pulling the motor and how excited I was to pull the valve covers so she sent me back to the Grosh.
Passenger side looks fantastic. Cams are great. And pointy. Bolts look great. Usually they just crack so I didn't necessarily expect to find anything but it's good to look.
Then I took off the drivers side. And saw this hiding under the cam. Sorry for the crappy picture. I was excited.
Out comes the magnet. And here we have the complete catastrophic failure of a head bolt.
Between the two rear cylinders. Right where the tech said it probably was.
Cams look great. Motor turns over smoothly. I'll still need to inspect the cylinders and check to make sure the rod isn't bent, but I'm thinking I got off lucky.
Now I KNOW what happened. I know how to proceed. I'm feeling good about this for the first time in a long time.
Nice! Even when it's something bad, maybe especially when it's something bad, it's a good feeling to have your theories validated.

I think you just named the car! Aufklärung!
Looking at that bolt with the head popped off makes me berkeleying angry. MB can join Hennessy Honda of Woodstock at the dick buffet.
