I need 18x9-11 wheels, or 19x9-11 for ru not 200tw stuff. And to decide about a front suspension setup. And aero. And a dash. And more fire suppression. And aero. And learn how to make reproduction fiberglass body parts. Amd aero. And big brakes. And....
I'd recommend genesis wheels... but they're 18x8 only.
Is this a CAM build, a challenge build, other.... d) All of the above. ?
In reply to sleepyhead the buffalo :
D. All of the above, and extra.
Challenge is a hopefully. Cam is maybe. Hpde, open track, hillclimbs, time trials is primarily the goal
I went looking to see if amc's / spirits had some imsa/trans-am aero inspiration... and my google image search for "amc spirit race car" came up thus...

I am looking forward to learn about how you go from a regular rpm ls build to a high rpm ls build. On challenge budget build no less.
Re aero: did it come with the front splitter I made for it? Of all the aero I did that was probably the only piece you may want to keep.
In reply to Robbie (Forum Supporter) :
Unfortunately not. Pictures you posted here are the only reason I even remembered it existed.
In reply to Somebeach (Forum Supporter) :
So am i! Ill need about 7k rpm if my math is right.
So, looking at front suspension swaps.
Id like good handling without the need for stupid spring rate, and good geometry.
The two "self contained " challenge budget friendly ones ive thought about so far are the 03+ crown vic, and stampies suggestion of rx8.
Am i missing any that i should consider? Im looking for <$200 all in, large braking capacity, rack and pinion, adjustability, good bumpsteer and negative camber gain, and a self contained cradle style that will work with frame rails and/or shock towers.
Im not going to go from scratch.
Open track performance emphasized over autocross performance.

Heh. It photographs well!
The rick harman red white and blue car is kinda the aesthetic im going for this time. Only as interpreted through modern aero.

I don't know about the shock towers, so this might be a non-starter... but a 350/370Z seems to fit part of the brief (and gives you 5x114)... and also leads to a secondary question: considering the emphasis on "open track performance"... should you be considering a donor that can provide an IRS/craddle & rear-arms?
re:Aero
any particular rules-set to keep in mind while building?
In reply to Dusterbd13-michael :
Maybe C4? Denny Crabill used it in a challenge CRX years ago. No idea how it would stack up to newer setups.

Having gone down this road and having owned a 350z I looked at using it. Problem is the upper A arm mounts to the unibody. The RX8/NC Miata upper a arm mounts to the subframe. That means all you have to do is locate the coilover tophat. I'm looking at doing a pushrod suspension locating the coilover on the subframe so that I have a true drop out/in front suspension.
In reply to sleepyhead the buffalo :
Stampie beat me to it!
As far as aero rules, i can't seem to find the classes for hillclimbs. Im guessing xp autocross rules would be a safe bet, but...
Eastsidetim: i briefly looked at those. Costs in my area and driving distance are way out of the realm of challenge budget. Also, upper control arms mount to c4 frame i believe. Or is it c5 that does that?
In reply to Dusterbd13-michael :
C4 suspension geometry really isn't that good. Yeah, it's a vast improvement over what was originally use on any of the hotrods it's been swapped into, and yeah it can be improved to be really good - which GM did on the later C4s, but they're rarely at donor-vehicle prices.
Go with the RX8, people can barely give those cars away.
complete rx8 subframe and suspension and big brakes, spare subframe, carbon fiber driveshaft, oil cooler, and strut tower bar. I had to pull it in a precarious position in the back side of a trailer park, but it was only $100 for the lot.
Please look on the challenge forum for a valuation post on the car.
https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/2000-challenge/whats-my-budget-an-fmv-post/187777/page1/#post3358687
Starting budget:
$300 car
$100 rx8 pile
$80 late mustang bullet wheels
$20 aluminum radiator
$85 big block chevy bellhousing and clutch fork
$30 f body t5 full of water and unknown condition from quasimofo (need a recipt)
$20 b&m shifter
Free geo tracker steering column, rack, fans, wipers from untouchabl
A fuel cell i bought from Patrick years ago for $30 or $50 (need a receipt)
I'm reading that list of parts and costs and in the background Led Zepplin's "Immigrant Song" just started playing.
Big block Chevrolet bellhousing and a T5? Car value set to $300 and you can kind of start over again on the thing? Holy smokes Bullwinkle.
In reply to pres589 (djronnebaum) :
Lost with the immigrant song reference. Care to explain?
And the bellhousing:
I mistyped at $85. It was $95
The t5 came from quasimofo as a complete unknown. Its a late v6 Camarotrans i think. He got it as an unknown with no shifter or history, with water in it then. Its been in storage for a year or two, and nobody wanted it for free when i was cleaning out. Its actually outside now....
Immigrant Song just starts off hard. I'm sitting here really looking forward to watching the re-build of this car. This is all a compliment of sorts.
In reply to pres589 (djronnebaum) :
I had to look up the lyrics. Its a song of viking glory.
Definitely fitting!!!
And its an ls and stick this time. And aero...
Ha, yes, that's the one. I had made an assumption that you knew it, but maybe we don't listen to the same tunes.
I didn't know that the BBC bellhousing pattern matched the LS'en. I knew about the aero as I noticed that thread. So far this sounds pretty great.
In reply to pres589 (djronnebaum) :
I could kinda hear the song in my head, but not the lyrics.
Also, thank you. Now i have zepplin and sabbath on the office Alexa. Not a bad mix! Been a long time since i rpcked that stuff.
And thanks for following again. I know its slow at the moment, as i have two cars to do and fix before this. So all im doing is measuring, planning, and shopping. Getting the good deals when they show up.
Rx8 rack.... not sure what you are gonna do to make that work. I know some people use the miata rack, but I think you need custom mounts to do that.
Good luck!
In reply to wvumtnbkr :
Ig appears that way. I have a free geo tracker rack ghat may work, but it looks like tbe ratio on it is stupid slow for sports car stuff. Quick Google show 19:1
Nc miata rack is $100 around here.
