You know, as flat at the body panels are it wouldn't be hard to stretch that body enough to stick that engine in the back. It would be terrifyingly awesome.

Or sideways literbike powerplant in the passenger seat. A short chain drive over to a small subaru rear diff. Add suspension to taste, you could DeDion it to match the stick axle on the front. The stock wheelbase will add to the excitement, and ultimate sleeper factor with appropriate muffler.
It's electric - have it stay that way.
Use about 36 (build as 6S 6P) Zippy 4s1p 4400 mAh (40C) LiFePO4 batteries as your "units", get a BMS and a motor controller, and a big electric motor. That gives you 96ish V, 28ish A*h, 2.5ish kWh capacity... and at 40C discharge,107kW!
I have a feeling that a 107kw electric drivetrain would rip that thing to shreds...
