It may be "too pretty to racecar" but it's also "too titleless to streetcar"
In reply to nocones :
No, I remember that. Just a shame considering how quickly it went back together to be most of a car, y'know?

The one we pulled apart in the junkyard was seemingly way better. Oh well.
So, yesterday was a big day for me, with lots of driving, friends, wrenching, and good food.
I started by driving about 2 hours through solid rain. I was thinking "Is picking up a free car in the rain a bad decision?"
Luckily, the rain subsided just about as I arrived, and we found the specimen. If I call it a barn find does that double the value?
After much work between 4 reasonably-sized men, we were loaded.
AND the seller threw in some free jackstands - BONUS! Also apparently these are mazdaspeed skirts, maybe worth something to someone?
What (who?) is Ultimate Driver?
Hope its not too loud for lemons...
Once we said goodbyes to the seller (seller?) we got on the road toward the pick-n-pull. The rx8 was so exticed to be out of the barn it was waiving at every single car that drove past.
Ahhh, junkyards. Sometimes it is so great to just walk around and see the crazy. I'm not sure this is how this is supposed to be assembled.
But we did find a parts donor in what is nearly the same color as our car (we think it is the same color, but some has clearly been repainted or has UV damage or something). In the trunk of the donor car I found THIS.
Nocones installed our new doors in the parking lot of the pick-n-pull with the car on the trailer. We marveled at how awesome that particular pick-n-pull was. Then we stopped for a Grossburger, which was also very awesome.
I headed for Gumby, but I had one important stop to make first.
They had a sign on front "no trailers over 16 ft" and I was like "pfft, whatever". Oh, but how serious they were. The turn getting out was very sharp and there was little room. I almost made a very large mess for myself. Luckily got out with inches to spare. Dummy.
After some more re-assembly at Gumby's, we really just HAD to see how it might look.
whew. More later.
Saturday was a good day. The yard we went to is fantastic. We walked it for a bit and they have a lot of good cars and their prices are cheap. Coultas is the name if your in Central Illinois, it's a You Pull it yard.
The price for:
Front and Rear drivers door
Trunklid with hinges and latches
All Door Seals for the whole car
Rear bumper cover
R & L Taillight
Electric Rack and Pinion
was $218.
And the guy that rang us up had a 1991 CRX and reads GRM.
Really excited for after the Challenge when we really start tearing into this thing.

If you have multiple Subaru engines/transaxles you *COULD* put one up front and one in back.

As I drove the border of the Bad Decision Triangle this weekend, (making sure to always keep bad decisions on my left and good on my right), I couldn't help but notice that Nocones, Gumby, and I have been promoted to 'Apex Seals' of the Bad Decision Triangle. I'm not sure we deserve this promotion.

E36 M3, dignity is outside the triangle too, so I mean whatever, right?

There is no resisting here..... None. You cross into the BDT all inhibitions, class and dignity are removed.
Also, not because it really matters but because it is interesting (and Gumby and I sort of discussed this).
My truck is flex fuel, and according to Ford it picks up like 30 HP when running e85 - nice. e85 is also a lot cheaper per gallon (at one station this weekend it was about 3.50/gal vs 4.50/gal for 87).
So I did a little test. My first "tank" was 250 miles and I used 23.2 gallons, but I had filled up with e85, so the tank was mostly e85. This section of trip had a trailer the whole way, with a car on it for less than half of the time. Next "tank" was 11.8 gallons, but I used 87 and had a trailer the whole way but no car on it at all.
First tank worked out to 11 MPG roughly and $0.32 per mile. Second tank worked out to 16 MPG roughly and $0.28 per mile. Both of those stats use the 3.5 vs 4.5 prices from same gas station at same time. Not a super scientific test, but the moral of the story is it all works out about the same. Want more power? get e85. Want to drive further before refueling? get 87. Don't worry about the minutia of the price difference, because it is minute.
Also Also, everyone please keep your eye out for a busted Alfa front bumper.
Mazda missed a huge opportunity for a triangle grill on the rx8.
Here's an awesome photoshop to give you the idea.

Oh no, that's ice cream.

No real updates today. But we did consider dropping the rotary requirement and instead going for a 2stroke V6 Evinrude 150 with "good compression but wiring issues" that we found cheap on marketplace.
What could go wrong?

Can't drive it too long, smell like a lawn mow,
If the headlights go out, jus jiggle the cord.
Lemons cars are always broke, but they're easy to fix.
So we rackin up laps, while you rollin on ya tricks...
