With the kids running out of ways to entertain themselves I thought that a motorized distraction was in order.

This cart was saved from the scrap bin. It was originally an electric Razor branded cart, that had been retrofitting with a Chinese 2 stroke engine that had died, hence it being sent to scrap. I found it while working for my City's "spring cleanup" last year. Pro-tip- if you volunteer to work the scrap metal station you can nab some good stuff!

The cart had a hard life. The seat has been replaced by a cut down elementary school chair. The back was missing so I added a scrap of plywood. The engine was toast, but it just so happened that at last year's cleanup I had brought home a 4 stroke Honda powered rototiller that ran well, but had a trashed gear train. The cart's engine had a gear box that contained the drum for a centrifugal clutch and reduces the shaft speed down to go kart friendly speeds. Miraculously it also bolted up to the Honda motor.

A piece of angle iron served as a rear engine mount and away we went! Unfortunately the original gearbox was not oil tight and ended up seizing. A new one was overnighted from China and seems to be holding.

It runs well and is almost scary fast, but still needs some work. I have a chain tensioner that I want to add, and the hard mounted engine and lack of suspension keeps vibrating the rear mount bolts free, allowing the engine to move and the chain to fall off.

Great find! I’ve been looking for a kart project for my kids and I, but everything I’m finding is either hundreds of dollars or so rusty/broken/incomplete as to be useless. Why the heck do new yard karts all list for over $700?!
