Wally! So glad you decided to come stay with us for (however long you need to stay to say you can register a vehicle in South carolina)!

We don't have inspection.  Not sure about salvage title, but I can find out!

I have looked into registering it out of state. There are a few hassles with insurance should something go wrong and NYC is starting to bother people with out of state tags and NY licenses if they stop them. I'm going to try and follow the rules and see if things work out. I know I don't have the best luck as far as that goes.

NY DMV is a cluster berk, always has been.  The Jaguar I just bought, has a Rebuilt/Salvage title.  I believe it started out in Connecticut.  The previous owner, to me, had it registered and insured, for about 3 years.  But that was here in NY.  Other than a title issue with an address change by the PO, (which took weeks to resolve), I had no problem registering here in NY.

My suggestion to you, is scare up as much paperwork as possible from the previous owner pertaining to the rebuild.  I think NYPD's investigation unit is in Long Island City.   I know this is a major PITA, but it is fixable.  DMV reigns in bureaucracy.

Sounds like a perfect reason to move to Michigan.

NYS has a place right across the River from me but getting an appointment and talking to a live person about what I need seems to be next to impossible.  The clerk at the office where I tried to register the car says there's about a three month wait for an appointment once Albany processes my request and when I called the number she gave me after a 45 minute wait they said they had no information on the process and didn't know anyone that did.

Good plan, the roads are so bad I wouldn't have to bother driving it.

Well, shoot!  Now with the Covid issues going on, who knows.  I feel for you.  I had to wait about six weeks for the Jaguar issue to resolve.  Just so much polishing the knobs, and making vroom sounds one can handle.  Another state/person may be an avenue.  Sad to say, but no good bargain goes unpunished.

I know, it's the first and last time I'll do something without overthinking.

Montana. There are about 7 state troopers in the whole state. Montanabahn is REAL.

FTFY   Low cost of living, plenty of fun backroads to hoon that thing upon, and they already are ok with the title.

We have some progress. I have an appointment with the state police on Monday at 8:30. By the end of the day I may have a title.

I'm somewhat optimistic. I finally got in touch with an inspector a couple weeks ago. He said they somewhat take into account that it passed in another state and that I won't have much paperwork. There's a chance it couod pass on the first try as long as nothing sticks out too badly.

As you well know, anything NY DMV related, is a BS story.  I have a good feeling about this.  Here's to hoping.  Best of luck, you'll be flogging it soon.

Nope.   We full.  And the people moving here are OK with raising taxes and increasing our well established low cost of living.  Its ruined.

It's an incredible car, I really shouldn't be trusted with it, it's funny what can happen without adult supervision.

It's been years since I've done one but the last time I towed a car to an inspection one had enough parts confiscated to not roll out on its own so there's always a chance things will go sideways. I have made peace with cutting it up as a donor for my Monte Carlo if they keep too much of it so I'm hoping karma works out and it passes.

Once my job wanted me to take some Western states for a sales territory traveling out of Chicago and they threw in Montana.  This was the approach.

Hey man, you like racing and cars.  Montana has no speed limits (not true at the time) on the interstates.  You might like to take that on.   You can travel as fast as you want.

Before you do that is there some technically legal albeit shady paths you can take if NY doesn't like the title? I know there are strange loopholes for trailers in MA and I saw something about opening an LLC in Montana to register a side by side to. Maybe you can register to the car via an LLC in a more lenient state and get around this with less effort than making it a parts car?

The problem with any other options is to make the appointment they took and kept the NC title so I have no paperwork except the bill of sale.
