Driver’s side 70% welded, lined up way better.

26” tires look HUGE on this tiny car.

Things

Other things.

i’ve agreed to trade the factory disc brake bits to a guy who is putting one of these Lincoln 5x5 deals in a gm pickup and has no brakes and a universal kit that wouldn’t work for him.  I’m anticipating aftermarket axles so none of that matters for me.  I was surprised to learn this is indeed a 9” and not a 9 3/8” because when has the internet ever been wrong?

hopefully Mr Nelson has some axles on his pile that can work for me, otherwise i shall hit the swap meets.  The short axle actually will work on the long side once things are shortened.  So I either need one 28 spline axle for the short side, or a pair of 31 spline axles because if i need to buy 2 i’m going stronger in anticipation of post challenge life and many more horsepowers.

Yes to cutting up rare classics.  And this is why the GRM forum wins.

I forget - do you have the jigging stuff?  I do have the jigging stuff, and a spare empty pumpkin useful as a jig, and you're free to use it for as long as you want if you want.  The only thing I do not have is the length of 1.5" bar stock required.

I'm loving the gasser look.   I helped a friend weld together a steel nose for a Camaro. to help with access it could tilt forward or you could remove the two pivot bolts, unplug the harness for the lights, and lift the whole thing off.

I love pretty much all things gasser, this is coming along nicely. I've always wondered how terrible it would be to have one as a fair weather daily.

Ran out of mig wire while finish welding the 4 link brackets.  Currently tig welding the ends, I haven’t touched the tig since I got the new Lincoln mig.  I finish welded the link brackets so any warping they would contribute to the housing happened before i tacked the bearing ends.

I’m rusty and it shows, but getting better as i get back into it

Ate, went out to finish, argon tank empty after about 4 seconds.  Oh well, I wasn’t supposed to finish this today for some reason.  Maybe the universe is saying “your back is on fire and you have to work tomorrow, stop moving this heavy crap around”

Mostly cleaning so I wouldn’t go insane.  Got to the point that I would open the garage, look at the mess, shut down mentally and walk away.  Never need to be there again.

i think challenge budget may dictate that the fancy front wheels go, but that decision doesn’t have to come until final budget is done.  In case, i did grab a pair of 15x4 vision rally wheels at enough less than the torque thrusts that it evens out the new housing ends for the rear axle.  The torque thrusts are the end game for this car and the rally wheels are dual drilled so they can be used on the front of the chevelle or belair for quarter mile duty.

Also the primer green trash night truck rallys sadly are going, because I want to have the rear bolt pattern of this car be 5x4.75 so i can have one set of drag slicks for multiple cars.  I do have a driveshaft that i was given that is either going to be perfect or a hair long, which I guess is better than short.

So after striking out on Craigslist, I named Carli the “director of Facebook marketplace Parts procurement”

she found an ad for 3 Racing seats for $25 each and the guy agreed to hold them for me.  What i ended up with was 3 racing seats, 3 covers, 2 with sliders and one with some nice aluminum brackets for $25 each.

as luck would have it, i had to come past summit racing on the way home.  I have budgeted $300 for chinese axles if worst case scenario.  They NEVER have 9” axles on clearance.  Today must be my day, because not only did they have a pair of moser axles that are each 1/2” longer than i need but with 1” of extra spline, they were $140 AND all clearance is 25% extra off right now so they were $105.  Also got the same swedged tubes that several steering parts are made from for $3.75 each and a rollover vent for $7.50 and 2’ long collector tubes for $15/pr

Had I known you wanted a race seat like those I could have sold you one or two and counted it as recoup budget.

In reply to DeadSkunk :

I didn’t know until recently.  Have a kirkey aluminum seat that i would have to fmv, and it won’t look right in the car so i wanted something that looked the part of old school low buck drag car.  The cheaper i can get stuff like axles and seats and steering tubes, the more i can spend on making more power

I'm keeping one of mine in reserve if the budget gets tight. They were included with the original car purchase vs putting my $35 Sparco in it.

Done and ready to assemble, after i get the mini spool and clean up/derust the center section(there is a reason it was free).  Also get to take the old and new axles over to my dad’s because he has a press so i can switch bearings over.

Un kajiggered.  Time to get an exact measurement on axles to trim them to length.  I’m REALLY digging all these 9” shortening and measuring tools I bought for this project.  I found another one of these disc brake lincoln axles for $55 after sitting on CL for months with no takers, so maybe my $35 wasn’t far off street value for a 2.75 open very wide 28 spline with odd(for ford) bolt circle and undesirable brakes.  I’ve been given housings for free before but have always given those to friends in need.

An hour of cleaning later, ready to assemble.  Very particular about metal inside, used t shirts as swabs to clean the tubes out.  I know, “when is he going to stop showing us pictures of his rear end?”

when i darn well please.
