Gapping rings. Do I need to have a torque plate? From reading, I understand it is the right thing to do. Will I regret not using one?

Torque plate is more for boring or honing the cylinder. Not so much about gaping rings.

Maybe if you were trying to squeeze every last ounce of power out of some spec motor, I doubt you need one. As mentioned, they are mostly used when boring, and not strictly required then.
