The car starts reliable, runs fine, and has been quite reliable in my ownership. Several future issues have made themselves apparent in the past couple weeks and another car came up for the right price. You know how it goes.....
- Head gaskets are starting to seep oil
- I don't know how old the timing belt is. The replacement interval is 105k. It is an interference motor. I pulled a timing cover back when I bought the car (at 210k) and the belt visibly looked OK, so I ran it. Do with this information what you will.
- Starting to notice a little bit of clutch slip with quick shifts. Still holds power fine under any circumstance, but it's there.
- Intermittent CEL, P0420. FWIW, this is a federal emissions car. It's off as of yesterday, but....
- The e-brake is non-functional. It's currently gutted on the right side. I seem to recall the caliper in that corner being seized as well.
- Muiltiple suspension clunks which I have not diagnosed
- Needs alignment
- Makes a shrieking bearing noise on cold starts. On cold mornings it's accompanied by a lingering voltage warning light. I deduce that it'll need an alternator, but have done nothing futher.
- The rear swaybar is removed
- The hatch doesn't open. I have a new latch for it, but haven't gotten to it.
- Cruise control works, but only when it wants to. Which is not often.
- The car is lifted 1 3/8" in the front and 1" in the rear on HDPE strut top spacers. They were cut freehand with a jigsaw. They're ugly, but they work.
It's not all bad news, though.
- Rear struts (KYB GR-2), battery (Interstate MT-35), two Timken wheel bearings have all been installed in the past 6ish months.
- Jazzy Engineering aux in "pro kit" works great
- Leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob from fancier Outbacks are installed
- Heated seats will burn you
- A/C blew cold in the fall, probably still does.
- The body is all solid
- The interior is pretty good
- Clean Carfax, if you're into that
- Takata air bag recall has been performed
Overall, it's a high mileage Subaru with some deferred maintenance. It shows this in appearance and mechanically. This is not the best nor the worst old Subaru you can buy. It starts every time, even when it's -25*. It stops and steers without incident.
Older pictures. Note: the roof rack, driving lights, and tires pictured are not included in the sale. I have some decent studded snow tires to put on it. I'll try to get it cleaned up this week and get some current pics. I'll also update this thread when I inevitable remember relevant information.
