I was just checking on 2002 prices... seeing what they are getting listed for on eBay Motors is heartbreaking.

Are they fun to drive? I've seen some come and go locally. Seems like they were all crusty in some way.

That depends on what entertains you. They are definitely not like modern BMWs, that's for sure. They have light, direct steering that's a little slow (but it's German, so slow steering is par for the course) and the example I drove/restored had bad shift linkage so I can't comment on the transmission. The driving position is good and the floor mounted pedals are amazing, and I used to say amazing without spending 911 money but apparently 2002s are getting into 911 money now. Guess they all rusted away.
They are not fast. They do not have very good brakes beyond what the 70 or so horsepower would require, and their handling is probably adequate for the low limits of the stock tire sizes. If fun to you is 80-140 pulls or burnouts, then they're probably not fun. What they are is nicely mechanical and direct without being punishing, and they are entertaining within their limits.
Or if you have 105k, there's one on eBay right now that's been heavily modified including an S14 engine from an E30 M3.

Thanks for the details. Way off topic, but I finally got my e36 sorted and have been having some ankle/knee issues with the throttle ;_; Lots of options of where to go now but there is a slightly crusty 2002 with ITBs I've been eyeing. Certainly not the responsible move buuuuut.. it's tempting.
