I wonder what the original builder's plan was - Lemons?

I thought that too, but then realized it's not a Lemons legal cage: no door bars. The lower bars are too low to qualify as door bars, I think.

Yeah, it's not even close to their modern rules, but the stock drivetrain in place has me scratching my head, lol

Oh, just reread the ad, must've been an old photo of the drivetrain

Welding or cage fab practice? Or is this an answer to a question no one asked?

Stage rally cages have sill bars like that (anti stump protrusion bars) but IIRC unless it's a FIA certified cage, chromoly is verboten, and I don't think .083 wall tubing is allowed no matter what material if you are making your own cage.

I wonder if he MIG welded it.  Fuzzy memory says you can't MIG chromoly without affecting the tubing strength, which is why bike frames are TIG welded or brazed.

Every rule book I've read (admittedly not that many) said Chromoly needs to get a thermal stress relief after welding. That's expensive and impractical unless you have a commercial heat treating business. I do, and I'd still use mild steel to avoid having to put my whole car body in a furnace lol.
