NMNA

I'll throw this out there. Sorry, I know nothing about Mercedes

There is a 1982 Wagon (google shows they are all 300TD?) for sale in Columbus, Oh. The car has been in a garage with the garage door open in an alley near my house for years. As far as I know it hasn't moved for years either, however, it now has new plates on it so it might run.

I happened by there today and there is a for sale sign on it. I don't know anything about it. In fact, today was the first time I looked close enough to see that it was a wagon. It's beige/light tan and it has the yellow fog lamps if that makes a difference.

If any interest, I'll get the number tomorrow. Sorry, I was walking the dog and didn't have a pen.

Where in Columbus? I may be interested (depending on price). I'll send you a PM.

In reply to EvanB: PM Replied.

No price on the sign.

I stopped by and took a quick look at it. Some rust on the lower half and rear fender arches but looks fairly solid. No third row seat unfortunately. I didn't look at it too much since I felt strange creeping around someones garage. Left a message at the number on the sign so I'll see if they call back.

Also saw an early 80s 7-series (I think) BMW sitting down the alley. Maybe I should browse the back alleys of Grandview more often.

After more than 2 years I drug this car home today.

Hey, better late than never.

So was it a diesel mode? Does it run?

It's a turbo diesel. It hadn't run in 8 years when I picked it up. The battery I ordered came around the same time I got it parked in the driveway. I put it in and the engine started after about 15 seconds of cranking. The old fuel lines were leaking badly so I shut it down quickly but the self leveling rear suspension pumped right up so that made me happy.

I forgot about it but she kept my number and called last week.

It has a fair amount of rust but for $500 it will make a nice beater wagon.

Wow. Score! Wanna run it on veggie oil? I'll give you a stupid, stuipd (good) price on everything you need to get up and running with the filtering side of things, including 100 gallons of oil.

I hadn't thought about it but that does sound tempting. Last time I tried to find used oil I had no sources. I'll have to check around and see if there is any way to get it around here.

Nice! If you find yourself in need of 617.951 parts, I may have some.

Here's what worked for me:
Go to Vista Print and get some free business cards. If you get the oil from me, you can call it a co-op on your business cards. You'll look much more official.

forget large places, start small. These guys are usually the ones that are not getting paid for it, or if they are, it's such a small amount that it's not worth the time/effort/mess/work to them to keep the contract.

Assure them that you are going to pick up ALL their oil. One stop shopping.

Explain that you can pick it up in the same cibues they get the oil in, no more hauling it out to the dumpster in the rain snow and paying the guy to take an extra smoke break after he hauls it out there ($ savings).

Offer to pay them what they are currently getting paid. It'll usually be $0.20 a gallon or so IF you have to pay for it.

If you are thinking about it, shoot me a PM. I keep meaning to put the stuff I have up for sale, but to a GRMer I'll make it worth your while, and work with you to help you get up and running.

Get used to buying diesel as often as you change your oil!

One more thing I forgot. We are getting close to Thanksgiving. Print a small note (a few lines of text is all) that you can slip into the 3 and 5 gallon jugs of fryer oil you see for sale at WalMart, Home Depot, grocery stores, Tractor Supply, etc. The note I included a friendly reminder that putting oil in the garbage is illegal and bad for the environment. I then tell them that I will recycle the oil for free and will pick it up. That little note would pay off every year. I'd usually get 20-30 gallons locally in the first week or two after thanksgiving, then I'd get another 20-30 gallons over the next 6 months. Some folks would call me every year.
One year I had a guy call me for 8 gallons one year. I showed up promptly to get it and was friendly and courteous. He was testing me. I passed. He then told me he had 300 gallons if I wanted it. Heck yeah I did!!!

I have been wondering about converting my daughters Jetta TDI, not the 2.0, the 1.9 that isn't being actively stalked by the EPA and DOJ! Not sure how she would do with it, but I like it a lot!
