I think it was one of lotus' attempts at making a more popular, 4 seat vehicle to sell to a larger audience.
In retrospect it looks like the answer to a question nobody asked.
Dude those are rare cars with pretty hot performance for the time, and they look to be in goodish condition.
I still don't want them. And that's saying something.

It's not exactly where I'd expect to find cars like that, which might be one of the reasons for them not selling.

The Lotus Elite I was thinking of used a Coventry Climax engine in an all fiberglass car that was very much a product of the 50's.

I've always liked the quirky Elite and Eclat but they got it right with the Excel.
