Broken valve cover looks like a bad sign, but worst case there's probably still some decent parts on there.

I'm not sure whether to hug you or hate you, but I went ahead and added this one to my watch list as a potential buy. I don't want to get into a bidding war with anyone else on here, so let me know if you're planning on going after it.
I noticed it's got rocker rust:

Might've been broken during the hood hit? (hopefully?)
After reviewing the pics a bit more in depth, I don't think there's a lot of meat on the bone for this one to be a flip. AWESOME opportunity if you want to own it for a one of your personal vehicles.
I'm still going to bid on it, because I don't have very much impulse control, but there's better candidates for a purely profit based flip.

Looks like only the shift knob is missing:
The boot shouldn't be pulled down like that, though. Weird. There's definitely a trans in there or there wouldn't be a shift lever :) The engine also isn't sitting with the nose down like I would expect with a missing trans.
Must be on some sort of engine management, there's no stock ECU involved with that intake.

People make short shifters by removing the rubber insulated top half of the shifter, then threading the base for a knob.
Yes, it shifts absolutely horribly.
In reply to Pete. (l33t FS) :
Does this interior shot reveal any new clues to verify what you suspect?
In reply to Indy - Guy :
I am not bidding on it. I am trying to be more selective on my purchases at least for a while.
FYI.
The Miata didn't make the seller's reserve in the auction yesterday and now it's listed with a "Buy-it-Now" option of $2,200. That makes it $2,909 plus tax with the fees.
Didn't sell at auction yesterday again. So.....
Popped up today with a lower Buy-It-Now option. Is there $2100 worth of parts here?
In reply to Keith Tanner :
I had my shift drop in my NB like that. It happened when the differential support broke at the notch and the transmission dropped down.
In reply to DeadSkunk (Warren) :
I had that typed out as a possible cause but didn't think the hit to the front of the car was enough. It's quite possible though.
In reply to DeadSkunk (Warren) & Keith Tanner :
Thanks for the info ! !
So add a replacement diff. to the cost of rebuild or maybe a transmission too?
In reply to Indy - Guy :
If it is broken you would need another diff cover (1.8 miata or rx7) or someone with Tig skills to weld the old one back together.
