found one local for a screaming deal, like challenge worthy with some room for extras
I know GM went away from it, but is it really that bad? Tricks to make it better?

They're no worse than the rest of the car. Relatively low tech,'80s GM weirdness and sketchy build quality. They work OK and they're pretty easy to fix. If they're serviced on a fairly regular basis they're reliable at stock power levels and they're easy to rebuild if they're trashed.
Awesome guys, thanks! I've always wanted a Corvette, and jokingly have said to myself that if a manual trans version came up under $2000, I would jump on it. Wouldn't you know!?! And it is very close by! Of course I took my truck to a guy last week to put a new engine in it, so I don't have a way to tow it home, but I can fix that pretty easy.

I think you could apply this statement to just about anything GM made in the 80's.
I'd highly recommend staying far far far away from a sub-$3k C4. Unless you don't like your money, time or skin on your knuckles.
They're kind of fun in a weird sort of way. The OD portion of mine was wired to a button, so you could turn it on and off that way. I would normally only use OD on the highway and that saves a lot of wear and tear on the unit.
In reply to Cotton:
Yours started life scotch taped together so it was "on" all the time. But I did the same, 1-4 then OD. To extend life I'd usually clutch the OD engagement as well,
I had an '88 4+3. OD was bad when I bough the car, once rebuilt it never gave me any trouble. You can still drive the car with a bad unit, just won't have OD. Turn it off in town and on for the freeway. As a bonus, the 4+3 cars got the stronger Dana 44 diff vs the Dana 36 the auto had. Better gear too, 3.07 vs 2.56
