I sold my 944 S2 (kinda miss that one), then my 996 and 986 S during COVID and before the new job and move.
I bought a full on rallycar based on having lots of fun in stock AWD rallycross. Now I live 6 hrs one way from where I can rallycross or more. Towing that far and messing with a full modified rallycar isn't realistic for me. Driving there, having fun and driving back is possible.
Lamenting this a friend asked what would I do if I could afford any car. I said easy: Porsche 911 GT2 and rallycross is silly! Of course the thoughts of that on video are epic. Sadly I can't afford a GT2. I can probably swing a 996 C4.
The 996 C4 is real close to 3000 lbs and 3" and 200 lbs smaller than a C4S too. Porsche only made about 4,000 a year for worldwide distribution. I have no idea how many are in the US.
Easy to find but hard too. Most cars listed as C4s are actually RWD C2s. The easiest way to tell is the frunk!
Obvious spare is a C2.
Inflatable spare under floor with structure to clear the front diff is a C4!
I want an M6 coupe, not a convertible. I will drive this car often nearly daily with the Miata and OBS in the mix.
The big ask is kiddo would love this car to be speed yellow! I want and need it to be as stock as possible. No aftermarket coilovers, no radical exhaust or anything that makes it ineligible for stock class rallycross. Ideally a 1999 year model is best due to IMS bearing concerns. I'd like one under 100k miles too but will consider higher mileage cars.
I have alerts on BaT, CnBids, autotempest and cargurus already. That still doesn't catch all the cars.

Close to 3000lbs? Uh...... maybe closer to 3500lbs. My turbo, with some lightening done to it, with a full tank of full, is around 3400 lbs
In reply to docwyte :
A C4 has to definitely be lighter than the turbo given the narrow body and lack of turbos and associated hardware.
Edit: car linked below decodes as RWD but might be worth investigating further.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for one. Quick search got me this one, not perfect but close:

Maybe? But mine weighs at least 150lbs less than a "normal" turbo and there's no way a C4 weighs over 400lbs less than my car.
According to Excellence, the turbo is 3,395 lbs and the C4 is 3,032 lbs.

I gotta call shenanigans on that. There simply isn't over 350lbs of turbo stuff on my car vs a C4.

When I get one I will have it weighed.

A C4S is 3200# so maybe it's 150# of turbo stuff.
Found one today that was in decent shape at an okay price..... and it was converted to RWD..... :(

Do they have the parts still? Really easy to bolt them back on and make it awd again. Which honestly isn't all that effective of an awd system and is kinda worthless unless you're going to drive it in snow. Even then, it's not that great of a system. I haven't taken mine out yet mostly because I'm lazy but at some point I probably should...

Weigh your turbochargers, intercoolers, extra oil and coolant, wider quarter panels, larger wheels and tires, and larger brakes. Easily 400 pounds.

I'm going to drive it on dirt.
So one popped up on facebook locally today. It has higher miles, but it's a stockish looking 2001 C4 M6 in guards red with clearcoat problems. I will be looking at it later this week. The owner has a C4, C4S and 996 twin turbo as well. He likes the cars, so that's good.
In reply to AnthonyGS (Forum Supporter) :
Ask him to put them all on a scale ;)

The red C4 MT6 sounds promising! Who cares about the paint when you're going to get it dirty.

That's a great idea. I will see since he is local.

I'm already researching clearcoat repair. Since it's going to be driven that's on the table.

That is a gorgeous millenium edition and someone will buy it! For $50k, I'd be shopping ratty turbo 996s or a 997 C4 which are rare. For my purposes that one is too expensive and too nice.

Wow that is a good deal! I also own 2.5 acres near there.
Man I bought a 2000 C4 in 2017 for $10k and sold it in 2019 for $8k. I can't believe they've gone up so much in price now.
