Wince. The awd system isn't really going to help there. Plus the lack of ground clearance and the relative fragile nature of the engine when used in motorsports just leads me to think that's a bad idea...

I think the AWD is going to work better than you do, but I only know one way to find out. I am worried about ground clearance and the oil pan. The g loads on dirt are way less so having oiling issues should not be as severe as pavement and the runs are short. M96s do fine at autocross too but track racing oiling becomes a concern for sure.

I'm looking at that one tomorrow. The video I have shows a lot of clearcoat damage, a big crack in the windshield and sluggish starts probably meaning a battery and new cables soon.

It's a viscous coupling that wears out, many of them on the older cars with mileage don't work at all. Even when it works properly it only sends a small amount of power to the small axle once the rear starts to slip. It's very much not a system like the Subaru's or Evo's. Several very knowledgable Porsche guys have told me to ditch it in my car, especially since I've installed the lsd in the rear. I've just been too lazy to do it honestly.

It's not all that different either. Subaru and Audi use a trans installed diff to drive the front axles instead on the rear. Then a tail shaft from the trans drives a diff to drive the rear wheels instead of the front. The Porsche trans looks a lot like a Quattro trans only it's not the opposite end of the car. Subarus can have everything from open to electronically controlled variable bias diffs. I do prefer gear type and clutch type diffs to viscous ones though.
I have some basically new muffler bypass pipes if you end up finding a 996 or 997. I made a lap or two around the block in my C4 and decided I couldn't do that to my neighbors.

Did you end up going to look at the car? Good, bad?
I did look at and drive the car. The owner was great to meet and the car is as advertised. The paint is super rough. It almost looks like someone thought it was an old single stage Porsche painted car and then burned up the clearcoat with a buffer on a number of panels. The interior was in great shape. The replacement clutch was super stiff (probably double stock pedal pressure) which the wife will not ever want to drive. The car also handled stiff on the M030 suspension and one of the rotors may have been warped. The windshield had a large crack, and the stereo antenna is in the windshield on these cars. The seller had an offer from a guy in CA already, and I admitted that offer seemed fair and was likely more than I'd pay. I believe the car went to CA.

Sounds like it wasn't the right car. I would've passed too unless it was extremely well priced.
Somewhat far but low miles and I have a feeling, based on the options, it might not do that well.

Thank you! I have been watching that one as well. I wish it were closer but the low bids so far have my interest. I love the OEM aero kit.
I've also beens shopping S3 Audis and newer WRXs. I really miss stock class rallycross in an AWD car and just driving home and cleaning it off.
Docwyte's comments and the modern creature comforts of my 18 Si also are reasons I now find myself perusing new WRX and S3 ads. 1st world car decisions.
I know I want to compete in stock class AWD rallycross again though as time and funds permit the trips I will have to take for it. Maybe I should post a thread on that?
