1960 European Volkswagen Beetle Slider Sunroof
Awesome, rust free, slider sunroof Euro model with semaphores. It was restored in the late 80s, early 90s. The owner passed away in the late 90s, and it was put in a garage for about 30 years. It has been gone through to make it run and drive well. To that end, it has new tires, a new fuel tank and cap, new fuel hose, a new carburetor, a new vacuum advance distributor, new park plugs, a new brake master cylinder, new brake light switch, new brake reservoir and all new brake hoses.
It is a Euro model with semaphore turn signals. When it was restored, it got USA aprons and bumpers. The off-white paint appears to be original, as it is inside the doors, etc, while the red paint is not original. It has Mangels 15x5.5” wheels with brand new all season tires and Porsche 356 style nipple hubcaps. There are a few scrapes and minor dents, but overall, it is in good shape. The semaphores are there, but not hooked up, as USA turn signals were added to the front fenders. All the lights work, turn signals, etc. The horn does not work.
The interior was done at the same time as the restoration – so it is red velour per 1990s style. It has a vintage cassette deck and 4 speakers. There are about 10 cassettes that can be included if the buyer wishes. The sunroof opens and closes easily and seals well. The red color has darkened a little bit, but might come back with some more scrubbing. It got a rebuilt transmission when it was restored, installed by Randy at Sportcar Service. The engine starts right off on the first crank every time, cold or hot, and feels very healthy for a 1200cc 36hp unit. It is very possible it was rebuilt and overbored when restored, but no paperwork to back that up. The brakes work well – it stops straight and easily. The steering has no freeplay and is tight. The shocks all work well and there are no shimmies, clunks or rattles when driving.
It is very clean, very rust free and a great driving Beetle. To find a slider sunroof these days is difficult. To find a rust free one like this in good shape is even harder. To find a European model with semaphores is as rare as hens teeth. This is a great opportunity to own a very cool, very good VW Beetle. Small partial trades considered.
