There are three major vintage races coming up this summer in your area. Mid-Ohio in June, Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix in July, and the fantastic event at Put-In-Bay on South Bass Island in early September. Four if you count the preliminary weekend at Beaver Run (Pitt Race Complex) leading up to the PVGP. I'll bet there will be turnkey vintage race cars for sale at all those events. That's probably the best way to purchase a race car. Take your time, get exactly what you want, and enjoy the process!

(I think it's a good idea for everybody to keep posting examples of what's for sale out there regardless of where they're located just to know where prices are at).

The PIB race is my main motivation for wanting to buy a car. Two years ago I spectated, last year I participated but didn't race (although some say we were actually racing when we did the parade lap of the old circuit at 85MPH), and this year I'm going to race my CRX in the exhibition class. So it would follow that next year I should move into the legit racing class, so I'm looking early for two reasons. One is exactly what you just pointed out, to get an idea of prices. The other is just in case the perfect car comes along that I can't pass up. I go to all the events you mentioned pretty much every year, so that's nothing new, and I'll be keeping an eye out this year for anything that fits the bill.

Believe me, I do, and there were a couple really fast ones last year. I plan on talking to them this year.

$2 vintage Spit "race car" on CL in the Hartford, CT area:

https://hartford.craigslist.org/cto/5228513130.html

It meets none of the criteria originally defined by Bravenrace, except being really affordable. And you'd probably need to dump $15-20K into it to make it an entry level, viable racer. But it's really cheap! Just sayin'

The center exhaust out the rear looks intriguing, and it does seem to be sitting a bit lower than stock height, so it appears that somebody has done something to it aside from the roll bar and funky windscreen.
