Heck yes I use an aftermarket wheel. I run a Momo Prototipo and I love it.

60s and 70s stock wheels were horrible, thin little plasticy things that slipped through your fingers if you weren't paying attention. And they were huge! Like bus wheel huge because the manufacturers thought that a big wheel was better with manual steering. NOT!

Regardless, those thin bakealite wheels were painful to use, and I am very happy that I got rid of mine.

Momo Monte Carlo. Simple and classic design. I've got two cars outfitted with them.

I agree factory wheels are genrally crappy... I had to order a custom hub from germany for the trabant! then put it in the lathe and recut it to fit a wheel that i got here in the states, as well as redrill it for an available bolt circle. {MOMO} so the answer is yes and i will go to great lengths to use an aftermkt wheel!! Im certain its the only trabant in the country with a custom steering wheel..

After suffering for years with the OEM plastic wood wheel in my Fiat to "keep it original", I've been installing MOMO wheels in most everything else (or facsimilies, like the one in my Mini). Night and day difference, and worth every penny. The same goes for shift knobs.

I like the original, huge wheel on our Amazon. It's a necessary part of the way the interior is styled. I did put a leather wheelskin on it, which fattens it up a bit and stops it being slippery. The leather shift knob is aftermarket.

The 1800S also has the original two-spoke wheel (not the same and not as large as the Amazon), and that also got a wheelskin. I replaced the original bakelite shift know with a turned aluminum one of exactly the same size and shape. (No pic handy, sorry.)

I use an aftermarket mahogany wheel in my BGT by Mountney, some like them, some not. I like it.

My MGB has the stock, skinny "banjo" wheel (see below). It looks and feels very period and I'm leaving it as is.

My Miata has the stock, fat Nardi wheel. My race-Spridget has a 10" wheel (JC Whitney) and my A35 has a nice 12" wheel from Jegs (Bottom picture).
