...needs a 5th option: Yes, but only as a spectator.
I spectated at Keith McCormick's auction in Palm Springs back in February 2005 I think it was. Back in those days he held it on the top floor of the 4-story municipal parking garage, and the cars being auctioned off occupied the top 2 floors. These days they set up a tent in the casino parking lot on North Indian Canyon Drive near his showroom. Anyway, it was fun. Good location and great weather in Palm Springs in February. I didn't buy anything. (My hotel room was broken into during that trip while I was in the pool and I lost my favorite watch. Bummer).
I'd love to go to a classic car auction, but unfortunately there is nothing like that anywhere near here. I'll make it to one someday, as I try to attend a significant high profile automobile event each year. With my wide range of automotive interests, though, it may take awhile. Last year was F1, this year looks like a major NHRA event.
I went as a seller/helper with my friend. He took a Lancia Flaminia to an Oklahoma auction that was poorly suited for this model but close to us. I think it sold too cheap to a phone bidder contacted by the auction dealer but the owner was pleased enough and bids were low on all the cars. They had two cars selling at one time about 50 feet apart and that seemed overly busy to me. It was fun and I would feel better going to another after being involved in one. Some neat cars went for a song. I detailed the snot out of that Lancia and it looked great. I was sore the next day from all the effort. Cheers Ron
