This past Friday I happened to have the day off and when I finally rolled out of bed and went downstairs for breakfast, low and behold TCM had on "The Fast and The Furious" what the?? Well it was from 1954. The movie itself is every bit the stinker that the modern equivalent is but being a pathetic sucker for anything with old cars I watched:
The racing footage looked like it could be the old Torrey Pines course and of course it featured many cool cars, XK120 with cut down screen, Frazer Nash etc. The stunts scenes are jolly but there were some more cool cars and well I wasn't quite ready to go out to the garage yet.
As for the rest of the flick well typical affair boy meets girl blah blah blah, moral imperative, OH we only have 20 feet of film left!!! Quick kiss the girl, the end.

Change the age and type of the cars and that's a pretty accurate description of Grand Prix & Le Mans as well. But I have a copy of each and still enjoy watching either of them on a rainy afternoon.
I didn't even know that the F&F was a remake or based on another movie.
Not a remake, per se. The only thing the two have in common are the titles and the fact that they include cars. I found the '54 version in a Walgreens $2 DVD bin some years ago.
Pretty cheesy by today's standards and probably drive-in fodder in the day. John Ireland and Dorothy Malone were pretty big draws, though, with the latter a sex symbol for some time. Or so I'm told by my parents...
It was fun to slow down the crash sequence to see how they did it with model cars and dolls. Also fun to try and figure out the vintage exotics shown in the race sequences and what they are worth today.
It's on Youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxmNaHGuaTk
I bought it on ebay after a search a few years ago, it is worth a watch, but not two.

I watched it on netflix about a month ago. I'd agree with the previous comments.

Yup. That's how I got my copy, too. I like the film.
Got a DVD of it for $1.00 somewhere.
XK120's, C-types, Allards, MG's ... even some Model T racers.
Sort-of-falsely-accused guy is running for Mexico, hooks up with a girl in a Jag, decides to use a nearby road race for cover to get to the border.

True story - I was just reading your reply and at the exact moment I read "running for Mexico", a song on Pandora said the exact same lyrics.
