I need some guidance. My brother recently passed, he has an avid hotrod builder.  One of my favorites was a 1969 Corvette.  He kept all of his license plates and registrations but we could never find the registration for this car.  While we were cleaning out some of his items I found the registration with the VIN.  The problem is prior to 1981 VIN numbers were only 13 digits (they are now 17 digits).  Almost all of the vin locator sites that I go to will not accept the 13 digit VIN.  Would anyone know a viable way or site that could help me locate the car?  It is one of the things I have sworn I would do.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions or help.

I found a post from 2009 online that says eBay does free Vin checks including 13 digit vins. Maybe this will be helpful in your search. I copied everything from the post and pasted it below.

"Here is how to access your vehicle history report for a 13 digit VIN.

It is free to list your car on ebay and it comes with a free autocheck including 13 digit VINs.
So just list your car and get a free report! If it doesn't list anything then there are probably no records for the last ~10 years.

OR

1. Sign into your E-Bay account.
2. Click the "SELL" tab.
3. Create an ebay motors listing for a car but STOP after you complete the page with your VIN.
4. Click the "Preview" button at the bottom.
5. Once you are previewing your ad click the "History" tab and it will automatically generate the report."

You'll need to log in to post.
