After the topic on keeping stock size tires on classics I've got a few questions. These may be too general a question but here goes. When did road racing tires move away from being street tires to strictly track tires? The 50's, 60's, etc? When were the first summer only performance tires available to the general public and what were the brands/names? Have there always been specialized tires for the different types of roads for rally cars or is that a fairly recent thing? Thanks in advance.
There were pure racing tires well before the 50s, probably closer to the 20s.
For as long as there have been tires, and even wheels, there have been differences. Goodyear didn't open up stores selling 1 tire, they sold several. Different widths, different treads, etc. Be it for different loads, different terrain, etc. Snow tires, truck tires, etc.
Thanks for the good info, it helps a lot. Thirty years ago I was looking for a innertube for a old Fiat and my turbo Mustang had those goofy TRX wheel and tire combo. Now I would not know where to start to look for a innertube and Coker Tire sells TRX tires! I hate getting old. I need to look at the back issues of CMS about some articles they had on tires.
