69 tr6. All original looking. Been sitting in the field under a tarp since 96. No exterior rot, floor pans are crunchy. Obviously doesn't run or drive. Looks to be complete and original paint. Top and interior are junk, unknown mechanical condition.
What's a realistic value? He wants 2500, I'm thinking 800. What's reality?
I dragged a parts car out of a barn in slightly worse shape than that 20 years ago for $500. The body and frame were scrap, but everything else was original and rebuildable. The uncut wiring harness, engine, and numerous other parts are in my '73 TR6 now. If it's been sitting over dirt like my parts car, the underside will be toast. You can replace floor pans (and it will probably need sills too), but I'd be shocked if the frame trailing arm sections weren't rotted out. I'd say you are closer to reality than he is. I certainly wouldn't go over $1000.
The real question is do you want to give yourself that many headaches? The body can have a lot of hidden rust in fender seams and beneath undercoating. If the frame is dead, you can get new, better reproductions. But they cost almost as much as a decent running car. Also, the car could have ended up in that field because the engine dropped its thrust washers.
Last year I passed on one similar to what you describe for $800. I called a TR6 buddy and he came by and bought it for $600. Said something about the rear carriers alone being worth that. So I guess the value all depends on your needs, and whats available. $2500 is a walk away price.
I fit comfortable in a tr6. My plans are more along low ranking challenge car than restoration.
So what you guys are saying is that 800 is a reasonable price, 2500 is crackhead. 800 may be high, but in the ballpark, and that rust may have turned it into a parts car, not a resurrection candidate. Correct?
Without having seen the car or even pictures, that sounds about right. Anything can be restored, and this car may be worth saving. I'm thinking of a particular Lotus Elan...
When I recently trashed a bent frame, the only pieces saved were the differential crossmembers.
