So my neighbor has asked if I'd be willing to do coolant & auto transmission fluid service on his mom's 1st gen fit. She's on a fixed income & he's a good guy so I'm planning to help out for something basic like a couple of beers or such, but don't want to get in some bind where I need to buy a $200 tool or risk having to keep the car tied up for more than a day. I have not yet seen the car to verify it is indeed a 1st gen or the mileage, etc. & don't have (or plan to buy) a service manual for it. Plan on using OEM Honda fluids & parts as it's not my car & I don't want any future hassles if they have dealer service or work later. So on to the questions...

1. Looking on FitFreaks there is no mention of a transmission filter on the first gen, but looking online for OEM parts I found 2 listed for a 2007. One looks like the inline style some of the gen 2 posts discuss ( looks like an inline fuel filter) & the other looks like a more normal in the pan style. Not sure if either actually applies to a 1st gen. Anyone got experience with this service on a 1st gen that can point me in the right direction?

2. Also on FitFreaks I saw mention of a bleeder screw for the cooling system near the firewall, but don't see mention of it being used in any write ups for draining & filling the coolant. Anybody know or have experience with this?

Thanks in advance.

Steve

Former first AND second gen owner here. Former fit freak too. There is a filter for that transmission. There used to be a write up about it. There is also updated auto trans fluid from Honda that started coming in the second gens from the factory. There is no timing belt. Supposedly a non-serviceable timing chain. The auto trans is also supposedly "sealed for life", but there is an access and filter. Let me google for a minute. I'll be back.

he says to use the z1, but I believe the updated stuff is dw1. I might not be accurate on that though.

Thanks! I had figured out the DW-1 trans fluid update.  Wasn't sure about the filter.  All the references I could find to a filter were Gen 2 cars except for a parts diagram on one of the OEM online discount parts places. The inline filter looks to be no big deal.  I plan to get eyeballs on the car before having them get parts, so I'll verify.

Definitely set a limit to everything you'll be doing on the car. Perhaps even in writing. As in "I'm not responsible for...." and "I will perform this work as a friend, I am not a professional, and will not be held liable for..."
