Replaced motor in said santa fe. Engine was free when I put it onto trans axle. Trans axle also was free. Engine won't rotate coupled to trans. 2003 all wheel drive 2.7 motor.Vehicle moves when pushed. What am I missing? There is a small amount of free play when I try to hand rotate engine. Thanks

I worked for Hyundai for 15 yrs. My first guess.....The Torque converter bolts have to be run almost all the way down finger tight to clear the block/oil pan. When you start to tighten the converter bolts with a wrench it can pull any gap that may have been between the flexplate and converter and now your other bolts that you haven't tightened yet are hitting the block/pan.

Or possibly the converter wasn't fully seated before the motor was bolted up to it.

Had to put converter on flex plate to mate engine and transaxle. Made sure converter was completely seated on flex plate and bolts were then run down. Went together all the way after doing this. Have unit installed in vehicle now with no power hooked up or linkage. Engine does rotate slightly. Just a couple of degrees and then no movement. Have axles and driveline attached. My first time working with all wheel drive and can't find anything that would not let it rotate.

If you attached the converter to engine/flexplate and then mated to trans im pretty sure the converter is not seated on the trans input shaft. Its a little tricky seating the converter in the trans by hand (which is a required step).

The converter should be fully seated in the trans before bolting up the engine.
