I'd like to bring back the CRX... its still under $2009. But I'll probably build something else.

I should be there with my RX7.

I know it's early but any word on dates and location? I know there was talk of a location change.

Sooooo much of the hard work has already been done. It's ready for a cage and reassembly with the engine of your choice. It even comes with a good coilover suspension, energy suspension bushings and a lot of stuff that you can sell off for high $$ to recoup a lot of money.

You guys do realize that pimping the Grand-challenge is sort of a joke, right? It is only useful to the few people who live near San Diego!

Everyone else would be better off going to Gainesville for the real challenge or hitting a Lemons event.

Don't get me wrong, it is an interesting concept and if it does well, then perhaps other areas can use the concept.

SVreX - I've initiated family discussions and not sure if we're going to do a homeschool team / family team or be there at all, but I've got some neat ideas and ways to progress the vehicle over the next few years.

My $2008 car is almost finished. I'm sure it will be sorted out by $2009

I didn't see any mention of the factory replacement brake hoses not counting toward the budget for $2009. Per mentioned changing this for $2009 when the RatGhia clan was asking about it. I don't car either way but might need that $50 difference in factory vs braided hoses in my budget by next year.

Haha I just bought an LTjuan for whichever car I use. Turbo with MS! The bottom end on those things can take some major abuse!

I just saw in the SDGC that tires aren't counted towards budget. Real drag radials or autocross tires are going to lower their times significantly.

find the cleanest bodied car you can on your local craigslist for $500, spend $509 dollars on upgrades keeping it simple, and come down and have a great time hoping to maybe win the best $1009 car. then when you get done school, you can go for something a little more out there when you're done school and have some challenge experience to put into it.

I agree with bluej.

It's best to keep car projects simple while you're in college. My advice would be to buy a decent running car and spend your time and money on suspension upgrades (stuff you can do in an afternoon).

The challenge is a year away. Get a job, save $200 a month for the next ten months, then work on building your car for the next two months.

It isn't the money thing that is killing me. I don't have anywhere to work on it. I don't think the school would like it if I parked a car in the parking lot to wrench on.

i'm guessing from your screen name that you allready have a car at school. can you have two? as long as you're good about cleaning up, not damaging the parking lot, and making sure that every time you walk away from the car it at least looks like it could be started up and driven away, you should be just fine. I dropped the transmission of my car in college multiple times, just be smart about how you work.
