Do these engines have two water pumps? Leak is on the front of the engine. Research has a WP under the intake manifold driven by the balance shaft belt on the Drivers side of the engine not the timing chain / passenger side.
ECS catalogs lists water pump connected to the timing chain????
Im confused!
Thanks for any help anyone can provide!
The only water pump is in the middle of the engine, driven by a tiny belt off of the back of one of the balance shafts. Nothing is driven by the timing chains but the balance shafts and the cams.

Thanks! That clears things up
Another question. Is the timing chain a wear item?
200k and to my knowledge original TC.
Sounds normal. No unusual noise.

If you got 200k from the chains, that must be some kind of record.
I've done lots of chain sets and they'd usually stretch so much they jumped time by 100k or so if they let it go that long. VWAG actually monitors chain stretch in the computer and will set a code when the cam position gets off to a certain point.

2 liter TSI, I take it? If so, yes, as are the multitude of guides. And make sure you put the latest design cam chain tensioner in while you are at it.
Rein water pumps any good or should spend another $100 for vw oem
Replace the whole housing, preferably with OEM. There's some complicated valving in there that directs where coolant goes and doesn't go, and it is a not uncommon failure. Half the time I replace a water pump assembly, it's because the valve has failed, not because the water pump is leaking.
If it doesn't come with it, there is also a short little thread spool like tube that goes on the front of the housing, that can leak and should be replaced any time the housing is off.
